Warm amber, smoky vanilla, and earthy oud tend to rise in popularity, but this season, experts are noticing some unexpected twists. Juicy, fruity fragrances typically reserved for summer and complex, floral-woody chypres are gaining traction. Indulgent gourmands also aren’t going anywhere (don’t worry), but they are becoming more adventurous than ever before.

In short? This year’s fall fragrance trends home in on one unexpected element that makes you smell extremely sophisticated and, above all, unique. “The biggest shift we’re noticing for fall 2026 is that fragrance is becoming more personal and less prescriptive,” adds perfumer Erwan Raguenes of DSM-Firmenich. Moody Fruits

In the past, fruity perfumes were often seen as too playful—bordering on juvenile—but they’re becoming way more sophisticated in today’s market. (Just ask perfumer Honorine Blanc, who once told me that juicy, bursting-with-flavor perfumes go hand in hand with luxury.) Now, we’re seeing more and more fruity concoctions pop up, and the trend is showing no signs of slowing down in cooler weather. However, it is gaining a darker, moodier touch. “After the explosion of playful, juicy fruits, we’re moving toward darker, more sensual expressions,” Raguenes says, calling out mouthwatering notes such as plum, cassis, and black cherry.

Modern Chypres

“At the same time, classic families like chypres are being refreshed with fruity facets and warm amber accords, making them feel more modern and approachable,” Raguenes adds. I always say that chypres are the coolest among the olfactory families, as they don’t fit inside a specific mold. They’re at once fresh, floral, and woody, which makes them smell wildly sophisticated. That said, their complexity makes them a bit of an acquired taste, but when you add fruity and amber notes to the equation, as Raguenes suggests, they “feel much more approachable for today’s consumer.”

Spicy Gourmands

Sticky-sweet gourmands and savory gourmands have dominated the trend cycle over the past couple of years. Now? It’s the spicy gourmand’s time to shine. A “more elevated take on sweetness,” Raguenes calls them, these edible-inspired compositions pair gourmand notes with woods, resins, and, of course, spices. “Saffron, cardamom, [and] toasted and nutty accords are having a moment, bringing depth and texture without making a fragrance feel overly heavy,” says perfumer Cécile Zarokian. “Consumers are still looking for comfort but are more adventurous and interested in complexity.”

Fragrance often takes inspiration from physical textures, but I’ve been noticing the sensory experience looking a lot more, shall I say, tactile. Materials like metal, paper, and stone are all over the perfume market as of late, such as Matiere Premiere’s Metal Lavender, which evokes an industrial lavender distillation facility in Provence, or Louis Vuitton’s Ink Mark, which pays homage to Chinese calligraphy on parchment. “[It] is built around that fascinating tension between introspection and urban effervescence,” master perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud says of the sandalwood-, white incense–, and amber-infused blend. While they’re not directly inspired by the material, I also must call out Vacanza’s stone-capped fragrances.
