“Many questions asked”: Former United captain blasts Michael Carrick’s side for missing “big opportunity”

Manchester United suffered yet another abject defeat as they were knocked out 3-2 by Brighton in the third round of the EFL Cup.

The home side raced into a 2-0 lead through Shea Lacey and Mason Mount, but were pegged back by an excellent Brighton team.

United’s defence was ruthlessly taken apart by a hungry Seagulls side, and Carrick seemingly had no answer.

The pressure will be heaped on manager Michael Carrick after his disastrous start to the season, and fans are certainly looking for some answers.

Speaking to Sky Sports, former Manchester United full-back Ashley Young was not impressed by what he saw unfold at Old Trafford.

Explaining what he witnessed, he said, “yeah, I think it is a big miss. I think Carrick will be seeing it as a big disappointment tonight. I think he’s changed the team and brought different players in to give them the opportunity that perhaps they haven’t been getting in the Premier League.”

Nonetheless, he asserted that the players on the pitch failed to live up to expectations and “I dont think anybody can turn around and say ‘I deserve to be in the team this weekend’ because the performances tonight just weren’t good enough.”

Young did admit that the side started well, but perhaps complacency slipped into their game in the first half.

He stated, “they started great, but then it was like ‘oh, maybe we have won the game already. We don’t need to do this anymore.’ They should have gone, ‘ok, can we get another goal and really put Brighton on the backfoot’ but they didn’t do that, So yeah, I think it is a big opportunity missed.”

The former Everton man also believed that United cannot dwell on the past too long and have a game of huge magnitude this Sunday versus Fulham.

He explained, “I feel they need to move on from it soon and straightaway. They’ve got another big game coming up this weekend. A game I feel they have to win win going into that international break. Otherwise, there are going to be so many questions asked.”

The match will kick off at 16:30 local time at Craven Cottage.
