We researched and tested dozens of essential oil diffusers to find the best options for bringing a little natural fragrance into your home. These are the diffusers we’d actually recommend for their thoughtful materials, quality, design, and ease of use.
A home that smells good just feels better, and an essential oil diffuser is one of our favorite ways to add fragrance to your space. Essential oils have long been used in aromatherapy for relaxation and sleep, and promising research suggests inhaled aromatherapy may help with stress and anxiety, too. A few drops of lavender before bed or eucalyptus during a busy workday can make a room feel a little more calming.
We also love diffusers as a simple alternative to candles. They’re flame-free, easy to use, and can scent a room without burning anything indoors. Most water-based models use just a few drops of essential oil, making them a nice option for bedrooms, home offices, and other spaces where you may not want an open flame.
Of course, natural doesn’t automatically mean risk-free. Essential oils are highly concentrated, and diffusing them can release VOCs into indoor air. The amount varies by oil, concentration, diffuser, and ventilation, so we recommend seeking out quality brands that prioritize thoughtful materials and clean fragrances. Also follow product directions, and be especially mindful when using essential oils around children and pets.
Our criteria:
We looked for and tested essential oil diffusers with simple, durable designs and materials suited to everyday use. Our picks include water-based ultrasonic models, plug-in options, and waterless diffusers.
- THOUGHTFUL MATERIALS | We prioritized home-friendly materials, including BPA-free options, and avoided unnecessary coatings or additives where possible.
- DESIGN & QUALITY | A diffuser can live on your nightstand or kitchen counter, so we looked for well-made options that look as good as they feel to use.
- EASE OF USE | We considered how easy each diffuser is to fill, clean, and incorporate into your daily routine. Some even have apps!
- AFFORDABILITY | We included options at a range of price points and sizes, from compact picks for bedrooms and desks to larger models for living spaces.
Whether you’re creating a calmer bedtime routine, freshening up your home office, or simply want your space to smell lovely without a candle, these are the essential oil diffusers we’d bring home. And if essential oils aren’t for you, our guides on nontoxic candles and eco-friendly humidifiers offer a few more ways to make your home feel fresh and inviting!
1. Aera
Best For | Smart dry diffusion technology, plug-in diffusers, bundles
Safe Ingredients | High-quality essential oils, safe synthetics when needed, hypoallergenic, free of harmful VOCs
Our Favorite Scents | Pacific Surf, Nordic Woods, Poetry
Aera takes a refreshingly different approach to home fragrance, and we were so excited to test both the Aera (covers up to 1,000 square feet) and the Aera Mini (up to 400 square feet). Instead of using water, heat, or traditional mist, these diffusers use patented dry diffusion technology to disperse fragrance as ultra-tiny scent molecules for an even, continuous experience. No water to refill or mist to wipe up!
The app was one of our biggest highlights. It let us adjust fragrance intensity and create schedules, so our home smelled lovely when we wanted it to, without running a diffuser around the clock. Aera says its fragrance capsules last up to 600 hours, or three months, and that seemed true from our experience—we ran the diffuser for hours, and it hardly made a dent in the fragrance capsule. Aera also offers dozens of scents to choose from, ranging from bright citrus and florals to woodsy blends and seasonal favorites.
Most importantly for us, though, we appreciate the thought Aera puts into its fragrance formulas. As parents and pet owners, we appreciate that Aera fragrances are hypoallergenic, free of harmful VOCs, and safe for babies and animals when used as directed. The fragrances combine essential oils with synthetic ingredients when needed for allergen, sustainability, or safety considerations, and the ingredients are approved by the International Fragrance Association (you can read the full ingredient list here). We feel safe using Aera in our home and love how simple yet modern these diffusers are!

2. Vitruvi
Best For | Beautiful stone diffusers
Safe Ingredients | 100% natural, plant-based scent blends and essential oils free from fillers or synthetics
Our Favorite Scents | Woody Santal Air, Pacific Air
Aesthetically, Vitruvi’s Air Waterless Diffuser made the top of our list. We fell in love with it as soon as we opened the box. It looks incredibly expensive yet is small enough to sit on a shelf or corner table while filling the space with a subtle, refreshing fragrance. It’s made with matte ceramic and BPA-free plastic, and uses a waterless nebulizer with atomization technology.
We found it just as easy to use, too, since it works like a traditional diffuser (you simply plug it in and press a button). The Air uses waterless cold-air diffusion, so there’s no reservoir to fill, just a simple fragrance cartridge. You can also choose your preferred intensity (five settings), and it will scent spaces up to 1,500 square feet (we love this one for our living room).
All of Vitruvi’s scents are made with 100% natural, plant-based blends, too. The essential oils are 100% pure with absolutely no fillers, diluting oils, synthetic fragrances, or unnatural components of any kind. Each 30ml cartridge lasts up to 30 days, and you’ll find plenty of scents to choose from, including calming blends for winding down, bright citrusy options for a morning boost, and seasonal fragrances to make the house feel extra cozy. Vitruvi also offers plug-in, cordless, and water-based stone diffusers.

3. Pura
Best For | Smart plug-in diffuser with customizable settings for every room
Safe Ingredients | Pet and kid-friendly fragrances that are paraben/phthalate free, and cruelty-free
Our Favorite Scents | Coconut Calm, Salt
Our first impressions of Pura Home? We love how much control it gives us over our everyday fragrance and how it keeps different areas of our home smelling fresh and inviting! The plug-in smart diffuser is compact and modern, and the physical setup is straightforward: plug it in, add your fragrance vials, and you’re ready to go. Connecting the app took a little longer since you need to pair it with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, but once it’s set up, we found ourselves fascinated by all the control options—you can set timers, create schedules, adjust scent intensity, and even manage different Puras in different rooms. One of our favorite things about testing it was being able to turn the diffuser on remotely before heading home, so we could walk through the door to a house that already smelled fresh. With a huge selection of nontoxic fragrances and subscription refills, it’s perfect for anyone looking for convenience and smart diffuser capabilities.

4. Seasons
Best For | Premium diffusers in fun shapes and colors
Safe Ingredients | 100% pure essential oils made with the highest quality ingredients
Our Favorite Scents | Glacial Mint, Wild Yuzu
Seasons essential diffusers are truly statement pieces, and the cutest, most colorful diffusers on our list. For our review, we tried the Soni Home, a more recent launch from the brand, in the color Praline. The stone-inspired diffuser is a gorgeous addition to our space, and we love the powerful mist and three LED lights for creating a calming environment. The timer options make it perfect for winding down before bed and falling asleep since it shuts off automatically. And while we love a good app/technology, there is something calming about a plug-in diffuser that works at the press of a button. The best part? You can use Seasons essential oils, or your own, with this diffuser since it’s water-based. Seasons also offers waterless diffusers, portable diffusers, and a clip diffuser for your car, plus fragrance blends and oils.

5. Aura House
Best For | Chic, tall diffuser with luxury hotel fragrances
Safe Ingredients | Fragrance oils are IFRA-compliant and free from parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, and synthetic dyes
Our Favorite Scents | Dubai, Coast
Aura House takes a more elevated approach to home fragrance, with sophisticated scents inspired by luxury hotels, destinations, and everyday rituals. Its fragrance oils are IFRA-compliant (safe for kids and pets), follow Clean at Sephora standards, and are made without ingredients like parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, and synthetic dyes. We loved setting up the Aura Scent Diffuser in our home (it’s absolutely gorgeous!), and the taller design works well in narrow spaces. Like others on the list, it uses cold-air technology to disperse fragrance without water or heat, making it a low-maintenance option without steam or moisture. Overall, Aura House is a chic yet simple diffuser option with a subscription model for easy refills. The scents feel more like a beautiful home fragrance than a traditional diffuser, with options ranging from fresh and citrusy to warm and woody.
