S&P/TSX composite closes higher as oil prices rise, U.S. markets end lower



TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index recovered its earlier losses and ended in positive territory on Monday, while U.S. stock markets closed lower as artificial-intelligence stocks slid.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 5.04 points at 35,702.

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index recovered its earlier losses and ended in positive territory on Monday, while U.S. stock markets closed lower as artificial-intelligence stocks slid.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 5.04 points at 35,702.53.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 152.09 points at 52,421.20. The S&P 500 index was down 37.00 points at 7,619.98, while the Nasdaq composite was down 146.62 points at 26,186.41.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.90 cents US compared with 72.12 cents US on Friday.

The October crude oil contract was up US$1.34 at US$101.39 per barrel.

The December gold contract was down US$57.00 at US$4,351.90 an ounce.
