Fighting game fans are once again clamoring for the return of a specific series thanks to a recent playtester job posting. As spotted by EventHubs, the playtest will have participants spend four hours playing an “unreleased AAA 2D fighting game.” Based on surrounding details, the game could be Injustice 3, a sequel to NetherRealm Studios’ DC-focused fighting game series.

Good Gamer Group is a publisher that helps organize NDA’d playtests for upcoming games. The company’s latest post is looking for “top-ranked 2D fighting game players” to take part in an in-person session in Culver City, Calif., from Sept. 14 to Sept. 15. Specifically, they are looking for those who “have achieved a rank in the top 25% of a major 2D fighting game.” Although this description doesn’t sound like a lot to go on, many are speculating that the playtest is for an unannounced sequel to NetherRealm Studios’ Injustice series.

Why do people think this unannounced fighting game is Injustice 3?

The fact that the playtest is for an “unreleased AAA 2D fighting game” disqualifies just about every announced but unreleased title in the genre: Virtua Fighter: Crossroads and Dead or Alive 7 are 3D fighters, while Melty Blood Type Twi-Lumina isn’t AAA.

This makes it seem like the mystery game hasn’t been announced yet, and while you would think that’s a large field, Injustice 3 is the most likely option. The playtest will be held in California, which implies the game will be developed in the United States — this also narrows things down significantly. NetherRealm Studios, which is behind Mortal Kombat and the first two Injustice games, is one of the few AAA fighting game-focused studios in the United States. The timing would also make sense: NetherRealm’s last game, Mortal Kombat 1, came out in 2023. There was a four-year gap between Mortal Kombat 11 and MK1, so if Injustice 3 came out in 2027, it would match that release cadence.

As for existing rumors, multiple voice actors have mentioned Injustice 3‘s existence, though they later walked back those comments. NetherRealm’s creative director, Ed Boon, has been posting Injustice clips as of late, which is a bit surprising given the most recent game in the series came out in 2017. A few months ago, DC announced the unfortunately named DCKO, a mobile fighting game that many initially assumed would be a new Injustice title. Hopefully, news of Injustice 3 can make up for it for DC fans excited to have Batman and Superman punch each other.
