PM Carney and Saskatchewan premier Scott Moe to ‘highlight historic investment in Canadian data sovereignty’ as high-stakes investment summit gets underway

What’s happening on (and off) Parliament Hill, plus the news you need to start your day.

After addressing the crowd at a “welcome reception” for the first-ever Canada Investment Summit last night  — where, as The Globe and Mail reports, he “spoke for 10 minutes” to an audience of “nearly 500 invited guests, most of them Canadian, from sectors such as banking, mining and technology, as well as federal and provincial politicians” at the Royal Ontario Museum — Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to spend the day making the rounds on the pre-summit circuit before he two-day event officially gets underway later tonight.

According to his office, the prime minister is booked in for back-to-back meetings with two high-level potential international investors: Shemara Wikramanayake, who serves as managing director of the Macquarie Group and Temasek Holdings CEO Dilhan Pillay — before he’s slated to join Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe at an afternoon event to “highlight a historic investment in Canadian data sovereignty.” (4:10 p.m.)

He’ll also make an appearance at the closed-door “opening gala dinner” tonight. (6:30 p.m.)

As per the Globe recap of last night’s reception, Carney “began his remarks by recounting that the ROM was founded by a Canadian banker, Sir Edmund Walker, who viewed museums as ‘shop windows’ through which visitors could glimpse Canada’s potential,” the paper reports.

“At the summit, Mr. Carney said, investors who manage more than $120-trillion ‘will come to peer into our shop window because the world is looking at Canada differently, and I suggest we should look at ourselves differently too.’”

Meanwhile, a “broad network of labour unions, Indigenous Nations, housing advocates, climate networks, and peace organizations” are set to team up for what the advisory describes as a “coordinated day of action to reject placing Canada’s economic future into the hands of the world’s most predatory financiers” as part of The Many vs. The Money “countersummit.”

Later this morning, representatives of the Council of Canadians, Canadian Union of Public Employees, Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, World BEYOND War and Dogwood will join Indigenous leaders for a mid-morning press conference aimed at “exposing the real cost of Carney’s CEO summit” (10 a.m.) with a “mass rally, march and direct intervention confronting the CEO delegation” set to target the venue this evening. (6 p.m.)

Also on the radar: Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald joins Farm Credit Canada officials, as well as London-area Liberal MPs Peter Fragiskatos and Arielle Kayabaga, at the Arva Flour Mill, which bills itself as the “Canada’s oldest commercial flour mill,” to share the details of new “investments” under the newly released National Food Security Strategy that, as per the advisory, “will strengthen domestic food production and processing, support the development of infrastructure and technology, and improve food affordability and reliability for Canadians.” (1 p.m.)

Back in the Greater Toronto Area, Women and Gender Equality Minister Rechie Valdez drops by Food Banks Mississauga to “highlight” new federal support “advancing menstrual equity and making life more affordable for communities across Canada.” (9 a.m.)

Members of the SENATE AGRICULTURE AND FORESTRY COMMITTEE head to Saskatoon to continue their ongoing investigation into food security during a two-day “fact-finding mission” that, as per the notice, will include meetings with “stakeholders from across the food supply chain, including food access organizations, agri-food innovators and researchers,” as well as “facility tours to gain first-hand insight into challenges and opportunities related to food security, resilience and innovation.”

IN THE CHAMBER
