Blizzard has officially announced Diablo 5, confirming the next mainline entry in the series is expected to arrive in spring 2029.

Announced during BlizzCon 2026’s opening ceremony, Blizzard has flipped the franchise’s usual setup, as every prior Diablo game has centred on stopping an apocalypse before it happens, and this one starts after one is already underway.

According to Blizzard, Diablo 5 is set a century after the events of Diablo 4, in a Sanctuary where Diablo has already triumphed and its heroes have already been defeated: “Sanctuary has fallen. Diablo won”.

A panel, hosted by Blizzard president Johanna Faries alongside the Diablo 5 development team, offered an early look at the game’s world, classes, and creative direction. It confirmed two returning classes – Demon Hunter and Monk – alongside brand new class Plague Knight.

Beyond that, details were scarce, and we didn’t get any insights into core gameplay systems, progression, or how any of this will actually translate into play.

Blizzard also confirmed that a Diablo animated series is in development with Netflix, though I’m afraid we didn’t get many details about that, either.

“Sanctuary’s darkness is spreading,” the description teases. “Blizzard and Netflix are developing a new animated series set in the world of Diablo, bringing the franchise to a new screen. We’ll have more to share as the series takes shape. Until then, stay awhile… and stay tuned.”

The Diablo franchise has passed more than 130 million players worldwide since its original 1996 release, and this year marks its 30th anniversary.
