American Airlines AAdvantage miles are some of my favorite rewards to earn and redeem. And there are plenty of ways to earn AAdvantage miles, whether you frequently fly American Airlines or earn miles through American Airlines credit cards and other partners.
In fact, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Legend Mastercard® (see rates and fees) is currently offering its highest-ever welcome offer following its August refresh. For a limited time, the card has a welcome offer of 125,000 bonus miles after spending $15,000 on purchases in the first five months from account opening.
Whether you’re sitting on a large balance already or considering this welcome offer, here’s what you should know about redeeming American AAdvantage miles.
How to redeem American Airlines AAdvantage miles for flights
As with most airline miles, the best way to redeem AAdvantage miles is usually for flights. You can easily search and book one-way, round-trip and multicity itineraries operated by American Airlines and most of its partners on the American Airlines website or app.
To do so, enter your origin, destination, travel date and number of passengers, plus whether you want to book one-way or round-trip. (If you want to book multicity, click “Advanced / multi-city search.”) Then, click the “Redeem miles” box.
Results for your search will appear. You can sort these results by award price, duration, arrival time and departure time. You can also filter the results by the number of stops, operating carrier and airport (for destinations with multiple nearby airports).
And if you have flexible travel dates, you can click on “Calendar” to see how award rates on your route compare across the entire month.
Once you find an award you like, click on its tile. A trip summary showing the itinerary and its cost in miles, and taxes and fees will load. You’ll need to log into your AAdvantage account at this point if you haven’t already.
On the next page, enter or confirm the traveler’s details and trip contact information. Click through to the next page to buy a mileage multiplier if you wish. Otherwise, you can select seats on the next page.

On the following page, you can buy checked bags. Then, you’ll reach the final booking page. You’ll need to select whether to buy insurance before you can enter your payment information and ticket your trip.
If you are flexible regarding your travel destination, you can use the award map feature. However, based on my experience, it often doesn’t show all the lowest-priced award destinations you could book. I recommend using Seats.aero if you want to see broad ways to use AAdvantage miles from a particular origin.
You can generally cancel an unused American Airlines AAdvantage award before departure and have your miles reinstated without a fee. You can also change many awards, though your itinerary may be repriced and require additional miles.

Redeeming AAdvantage miles for American Airlines flights
AAdvantage prices American Airlines award flights dynamically, so there isn’t a fixed award chart that defines how many miles these flights cost. Instead, the award cost of these flights can vary drastically based on date, departure time, when you book and more.
For example, AAdvantage award flights can vary significantly in mileage cost, even on flights that are just a few hours apart.
You can book Main Cabin economy award flights on American Airlines-operated flights, as well as premium economy, business-class and first-class awards, through AAdvantage.
Of course, the cabins you can book on any given flight may vary based on what’s available on that aircraft type and what American makes available for award bookings.

Redeeming AAdvantage miles for partner flights
AAdvantage has Oneworld partners as well as non-Oneworld partners like Aer Lingus and Etihad Airways that you can book with American Airlines miles.
While American-operated AAdvantage awards use dynamic award pricing, most partner awards follow the American Airlines AAdvantage partner award charts. And if even just one leg of your itinerary is operated by a partner, the award pricing will usually follow the partner award charts. For example, here’s the AAdvantage partner award chart for one-way itineraries that start in the continental U.S. or Canada:

However, there are always exclusions at the bottom of each AAdvantage partner award chart. For this one, business- and first-class awards that include travel on an aircraft with lie-flat seats in the U.S. and Canada cost 7,500 miles more than is shown. Plus, you can only travel in certain directions or transit certain regions when traveling to some regions.
And unfortunately, not every partner award follows these rates. Awards operated by Fiji Airways and Air Tahiti Nui use dynamic pricing, so you may see rates significantly higher than those shown on the partner award chart. For example, a nonstop economy Fiji Airways flight might cost 28,000 miles one day and 100,000 miles the next.

Additionally, it’s worth remembering that the taxes and fees can vary drastically not only by route but also by operating airline. In particular, awards with segments operated by British Airways often have high taxes and fees. Luckily, you’ll see the taxes and fees when you search for awards on the American Airlines website or app.

Other ways to redeem AAdvantage miles
It’s usually best to redeem American Airlines AAdvantage miles for flights, but you do have some other options.
Flight upgrades
You can redeem miles to upgrade American Airlines and Qantas flights.
Head to the American Airlines website or app and find your trip to upgrade American Airlines flights. Once you open your trip, you’ll likely see an upgrade offer under your trip details. In this case, I could redeem 63,900 miles or pay $584 for an upgrade on a three-hour flight.
Redeeming miles for this upgrade would yield only 0.91 cents per mile, which is significantly less than TPG’s September 2026 valuation of AAdvantage miles.
For Qantas flights, you can request an upgrade with AAdvantage miles if you booked an eligible trip. You’ll find out 24 hours before departure whether your upgrade has cleared. Head to this page to enter your confirmation code and last name to see if your trip is eligible.
Seats on American Airlines-operated flights
You can also redeem AAdvantage miles for seats on American-operated flights. In this example, you could redeem 7,300 to 8,300 miles or pay $70 to $80 for Main Cabin Extra seats.

However, doing so will only give you 0.96 cents per mile, which is significantly lower than TPG’s valuation of AAdvantage miles.
Admirals Club access
You can also redeem American miles for Admirals Club access in the form of a one-day pass or membership. One-day passes cost 7,900 AAdvantage miles or $79, while annual memberships that provide individual access to nearly 50 Admirals Club lounges cost 75,000 miles or $750.
Meanwhile, annual memberships that provide access for you and up to two guests to more than 100 Admirals Club lounges and partner lounges worldwide vary as follows based on your AAdvantage elite status tier:
- Member: 140,000 miles or $1,400
- Gold: 135,000 miles or $1,350
- Platinum: 130,000 miles or $1,300
- Platinum Pro: 125,000 miles or $1,250
- Executive Platinum: 120,000 miles or $1,200
As you can see, you’ll only get 1 cent per mile when redeeming AAdvantage miles for an Admirals Club membership or a one-day pass. For many AAdvantage members, getting the Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Legend Mastercard — which provides the primary cardholder full membership access privileges to Admirals Club lounges — will be a much better option than redeeming miles for lounge access.

Five Star Service
You can also redeem American miles for Five Star Service at 16 U.S. airports if you have a first- or business-class ticket. Five Star Service provides:
- Access to Flagship First check-in (or priority check-in if Flagship First check-in is unavailable)
- Admirals Club lounge access
- Personalized service through the airport
- Priority boarding and reaccommodation
- Car service coordination
Five Star Service costs 35,000 miles or $350 for the first person, plus 10,000 miles or $100 per additional adult and 5,000 miles or $50 per child 17 and under if there are five or fewer people in your party. Otherwise, you’ll need to pay an additional $350 for an additional Five Star Service greeter for every five additional travelers in your party.

Hotel, rental car, cruise and vacation bookings
It’s also possible to redeem American miles for hotel bookings through the AAdvantage Hotels platform, rental cars through the AAdvantage Cars platform, cruises through the AAdvantage Cruises platform and vacation packages through the AAdvantage Vacations platform.
However, these platforms are usually better used for earning miles and Loyalty Points than for redemptions, as they typically offer only 1 cent per mile or less.

Experiences, gift cards and merchandise
Finally, you can also redeem American miles for Ticketmaster tickets on the AAdvantage Events platform, merchandise through the AAdvantage Exchange platform and gift cards through the AAdvantage Gift Cards platform. And if you are a Citi / AAdvantage cardholder, you can redeem American miles to book Mastercard Priceless experiences.
However, don’t expect any of these options to give you outsize value. Even with an AAdvantage cardholder discount, I’d still only get 0.7 cents per mile when redeeming for an Amazon gift card.

How much are American Airlines AAdvantage miles worth?
Based on TPG’s September 2026 valuations, American AAdvantage miles are worth 1.45 cents each. This valuation is based on the AAdvantage awards Points Path users saw during searches over a three-month window before the valuations were published. As such, it represents the value you can get from AAdvantage miles if you don’t try to maximize them.
As a reminder, you can compare your redemption rate — the comparable paid rate minus the taxes and fees you’d pay on the award, all divided by the award’s mileage cost — to TPG’s valuation to determine whether you’re getting decent value on your redemption.
American Airlines AAdvantage prices its own flights dynamically, but you may still see some very high or low redemption rates. Meanwhile, partner-operated awards that follow an award chart may offer poor value on some routes but outsize value on others. In particular, you can often get great value when booking long-haul premium cabin awards operated by partner airlines like Qatar Airways and Japan Airlines.

Bottom line
American Airlines AAdvantage miles can be extremely useful, especially since you can redeem them for flights on American and a wide range of partner airlines. American-operated awards use dynamic pricing, while most partner awards still start at published award chart rates. So, having flexible travel dates and comparing your options can help you stretch your miles further.
You can also redeem AAdvantage miles for upgrades, seats, Admirals Club access, hotels, rental cars, cruises, vacation packages and more. However, many of these options only give a redemption rate of 1 cent per mile or less. So, I prefer to save my AAdvantage miles for flights, including high-value partner-operated awards.
