Why CEO of Wegovy maker Novo Nordisk isn’t sold yet on the peptide craze

Novo Nordisk (NVO) CEO Mike Doustdar is all in on selling as much as possible of the drug giant’s Wegovy weight-loss peptide.

But he is far less enthusiastic about what’s happening in the underground market in the peptide world, where untested injections are being bought up by influencers looking to improve their skin complexion or weekend gym warriors aiming to shred pounds.

“There are so many of these peptides out there that, unlike the Wegovy pill, unlike our insulin, are not tested. They have not gone through clinical trials, at best. Maybe there are some animal studies, and people have seen how they have behaved in a rat or a mouse, but not in a human. It’s really good that our industry is regulated because medicines can have severe side effects. Medicine, you know, can kill if misused. So this is not like going and buying a fake Gucci bag. It has serious consequences,” Doustdar said in a new episode of the Power Players With Brian Sozzi podcast (video above; listen in below).

Doustdar thinks the FDA should be regulating these types of peptides.

“They have not been tested. So the answer from my side is I have no clue [if they are safe], and for sure I don’t want to take the risk on myself. Maybe they have benefits, maybe they have risks, maybe they don’t. But why would you take such a big gamble and bet with your body, with your health? I see of course a lot of people are influenced by influencers and others. I want the people to think a little bit more, not just about the benefits of them, which the influencers often talk about but also the risks and outweigh the risks versus the benefits. I would not think, for me, this is worth it. Now, will, I think that some time in the future, some of these molecules and some of these peptides should be tested properly by companies and go through FDA and regulations that we are obliged to deliver to? Absolutely. That’s fine. If there’s a market for them and if there’s a need, let’s test them. Let’s put the safe version of them out there, but let’s not gamble with our safety,” Doustdar added.

Driven by social media trends and the popularity of weight-loss drugs, the market for biohacking and wellness peptides—such as BPC-157 and TB-500—has boomed among consumers in search of anti-aging, injury recovery, and muscle growth benefits.

Because the Food and Drug Administration previously placed many of these unapproved compounds on a restricted list prohibiting pharmacy compounding, millions of users migrated toward a black and gray market where regulations are non-existent.

In response, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr., a self-described “big fan” who admits to using peptides himself, initiated a major policy pivot to roll back FDA restrictions on roughly 14 popular peptides.

Kennedy argued that previous regulatory bans were illegal and actively fueled a dangerous illicit market, claiming that reclassifying them for legal compounding will restore regulated access through legitimate pharmacies.

As for Doustdar, he took over as CEO at Novo Nordisk in August 2025, succeeding long-time leader Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen. He has spent 33 years at Novo Nordisk, rising from an entry-level office clerk in Vienna in 1992 to the corner office.

In 2015, he was promoted to executive vice president of international operations, where he successfully managed the company’s entire commercial business footprint outside the US and doubled sales across the division.

Today, Doustdar leads the global healthcare powerhouse as it navigates intense market competition in the GLP-1 market mainly with rival Eli Lilly (LLY).

Doustdar says he is focused on improved marketing of Wegovy while continuing to build momentum behind its pill form — which fell short of analyst estimates in the most recent quarter. He is also investing more aggressively in R&D to help overcoming future patent expirations in coming years.

Successfully pulling these things off will be paramount to getting Novo Nordisk’s stock back in the good graces of Wall Street.

Shares of Novo Nordisk are down 17% in the past year compared to a 20% gain for the S&P 500. Eli Lilly shares are up 57% during that same stretch.

“Going forward with limited clinical data to support long term revenues, investor focus will shift to Business Development/M&A plans as well as the strategy update at the CMD (September 21st), however, investors are skeptical given Novo’s lack of track record integrating larger acquisitions and given disappointing data from bolt-on acquisitions (ocedurenone, monlunabant, ziltivekimab), although more pipeline successes will help to diversify concentration risk associated with the obesity franchise,” Goldman Sachs analyst James Quigley said in a note.
