S&P/TSX composite edges higher in late-morning trading, U.S. stocks lower

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index edged higher in late-morning trading helped by gains in the industrials sector, while U.S. stock markets moved lower.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 10.72 points at 36,643.84.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 376.68 points at 53,309.43. The S&P 500 index was down 38.00 points at 7,709.71, while the Nasdaq composite was down 117.03 points at 26,467.03.

The Canadian dollar traded for 72.26 cents US compared with 72.52 cents US on Thursday.

The October crude oil contract was down 91 cents US at US$90.39 per barrel.

The December gold contract was down US$56.50 at US$4,483.40 an ounce.
