Minister Joly to participate in 75th anniversary NATO Summit

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced today that she will participate in the 75th anniversary Summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Washington, D.C., from July 9 to 11, 2024, alongside Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence.

At the summit, Minister Joly will underscore Canada’s steadfast support for the Alliance and enduring commitment to the transatlantic bond, as demonstrated by Canada’s ongoing contributions to the security of the Euro-Atlantic area. She will also reaffirm Canada’s commitment to its leadership role as the framework nation for the NATO Multinational Battlegroup Latvia.

Minister Joly will also highlight Canada’s successful establishment of the NATO Climate Change and Security Centre of Excellence, based in Montréal, Quebec, at an event on July 9, 2024, hosted by Canada’s Embassy to the United States. She will emphasize the importance and impact of climate change to the security of Canada and NATO Allies and partners, as well as the global community.

At the summit, Minister Joly will also meet with her Romanian counterpart to sign a joint declaration on a Canada-Romania Consolidated Partnership, as well as with other counterparts to reiterate Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia’s ongoing illegal and unprovoked war of aggression. Canada will continue to work with Allies and the broader international community to support Ukraine’s defence of its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
