In the isolated valley of Vale Sangora, darkness has conquered the land. It may not be obvious at first glance in the light of day as people go about their work, untouched by the black plague that ravages the land beyond the Carpathian Mountains. Yet, when night falls, the rulers of the Vale, the vrakhiri, awaken and take their royal tithe from their subjects in blood.

And you, Coen, are one of them.

This clique of Vrakhiri claim to be benevolent rulers, but their motives are more than suspect.

Against your will, you have been cursed with the hunger for blood as punishment for your rebellion against your vampire masters. In 30 days, Brencis, the valley’s new ruler, will execute the rest of your family and your village to commemorate his coronation. When that happens, his rule will be absolute.

Your loved ones will serve as an example of what happens to those who oppose the rule of Brencis.

But when Brencis turned you for your insolence, something went wrong.

Now you roam the land as a dawnwalker – a vampire at night, a human by day. You serve no master but yourself. Your vrakhir sire cannot control you, yet you will struggle to overcome him alone. You need power, resources, and allies.

You need time you do not have.

Alone, your fight against such powerful vampires would almost certainly be deadly, but perhaps not impossible.

The humans of the Vale are ripe for revolution. The vrakhiri’s blood cured them of plague, but as the vampires grow more comfortable with their reign, people are beginning to vanish without a trace. Those who displease the vrakhiri are made an example in the most gruesome way. The weak are being culled. What was seen as salvation from disease is starting to feel like a slower but no less inevitable death.

With your abilities, they could have a fighting chance, and you would have a host of allies at your side to storm Brencis’ keep. If humans can learn to trust a vampire.

The rebels won’t be eager to trade one vrakiri ruler for another, you’ll have to show them that your humanity hasn’t been destroyed.

The riches of the Vale have historically slept in silver mines, like the one in Laslea, your home. The touch of silver is loathsome to the vrakhiri, and they guard it ferociously, but tales have long been told of a vast network of caves below the city of Svartrau where smugglers and thieves have been hiding stolen treasures for generations.

If you acquire enough silver to augment the rebellion’s weapons, you would have the resources to strike fear into the vampires’ hearts. If, that is, you can survive the deep mines and the horrors that guard it.

Test your blade against wild beasts like you have never seen before.

The Vrakhir are not the only creatures of legend who haunt the Vale. Ancient ruins hold sorcerous secrets and uneasy ghosts. Tatzelwurms bask in the muddy swamps. Kobolds infest caves and mines, eager to snatch anyone who wanders too far from the surface. The veil of mythology is thin here, and those who learn the ways of witchcraft can learn truths capable of turning reality inside out.
