An Invisible Wallflower

A few years before my mother passed away, we were having a conversation about my dad.  She told me the story of the first time they met. It was at one of those old-time mountain dances; the kind where they would put all of the furniture out in the yard and open up the house for a party.  People would come from miles around, play music and dance on the hardwood floors all night long.

She said they saw each other from across the room and a mutual friend introduced them. The moment their eyes met, they knew they were meant to be together; it was love at first sight.  They danced the night away and never looked back.

My dad had been gone for years when we had this conversation, and she had moved on with her life, but she told me that she still felt the same love for him that she felt the first time they met. And she believed in her heart that he felt the same way up until the moment he died. The years after they were married were challenging, but their love for each other never waned. Her words to me were, “Ours was the always and forever kind of love.”

I have mentioned in a few of my recent posts that my parents have been on my mind a lot lately. So, when I was trying to decide what to write for today, I wasn’t surprised when I thought of them.  I have wondered what that night might have been like. How many people were there? What music was playing and how many dances did they share? How often did they just sit and talk?

I think if I could somehow go back in time and be an invisible wallflower at that mountain dance all those years ago, I might actually do it.  Not to interfere or change anything, but simply to witness the magical moment when my parents’ eyes first met and they instantly realized a love that would be forever and always.

If you could go back and witness any historical event, which one would you pick?
