S&P/TSX composite down nearly 400 points, U.S. stock markets also lower



TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down nearly 400 points in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the industrial, technology and base metal sectors, while higher oil prices helped boost energy stocks.

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down nearly 400 points in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the industrial, technology and base metal sectors, while higher oil prices helped boost energy stocks.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 379.33 points at 35,891.15.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 218.27 points at 52,967.63. The S&P 500 index was down 37.12 points at 7,649.02, while the Nasdaq composite was down 203.22 points at 26,167.67.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.91 cents US compared with 72.12 cents US on Monday.

The October crude oil contract was up US$2.27 at US$88.03 per barrel.

The December gold contract was down US$65.20 at US$4,416.30 an ounce.
