If you have the Discover it® Cash Back Credit Card or Discover it® Student Cash Back, take note: Discover has revealed its fourth-quarter rotating categories.

TPG has exclusively learned that beginning Oct. 1, eligible cardholders who activate can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined eligible purchases across entertainment, restaurants and utilities.

Activation is now open, giving cardholders a month to register before the new categories go live.

You can also register after Oct. 1, just remember that Discover’s 5% cash back isn’t retroactive — you’ll only earn the elevated rate on qualifying purchases made after you activate.

Here’s what to know about the new categories and how this year’s lineup breaks from Discover’s typical fourth-quarter playbook.

Discover Q4 2026 categories

Beginning Oct. 1, eligible Discover it Cash Back and Discover it Student Cash Back cardholders can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases across:

• Entertainment: including movies, concerts and live sporting events
• Restaurants: including full-service restaurants, fast food, takeout and delivery
• Utilities: including electricity, water, internet and phone services

The categories are active from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, and activation is now open.

If you maximize the $1,500 combined quarterly spending cap, you can earn $75 in cash back at the 5% rate during Q4. After you reach the cap, additional purchases earn the card’s standard 1% cash-back rate.

One thing to keep in mind with utilities: Check whether your provider charges a fee for paying by credit card, since that could offset some or all of the additional cash back you’d earn.

And don’t forget about Q3 just yet: Cardholders can still activate the current categories — gas stations and EV charging, airlines and public transportation, and drugstores — and earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined eligible purchases through Sept. 30.

Analyzing the Q4 bonus categories

Discover’s Q4 lineup looks notably different from its typical fourth-quarter offerings.

Historically, the fourth quarter has been a major opportunity to earn bonus cash back on holiday shopping, with Amazon appearing as a Q4 category every year from 2017 through 2025. Target or Walmart also appeared during several of those years. This year, none of those retailers is included.

• Entertainment: For the first time, eligible cardholders can earn 5% cash back on qualifying entertainment purchases, including movies, concerts and live sporting events.
• Restaurants: Restaurants are returning as a 5% category for the second time this year. Since restaurants have not previously appeared as a Q4 category, this gives cardholders a new opportunity to earn bonus cash back on dining during the holiday season.
• Utilities: Utilities return as a cash-back category for the second consecutive year, offering 5% cash back on qualifying recurring household expenses such as electricity, water, internet and phone services. Because these are recurring bills, this category could be an easy way to work toward the quarterly spending cap.

These categories represent a shift toward categories that align with holiday experiences and recurring household expenses.

With three different bonus categories to choose from, cardholders have several ways to work toward the $1,500 quarterly cap. Eligible purchases across all three categories count toward the same combined spending limit.

How do Discover’s rotating categories work?

Each quarter, Discover announces a new group of bonus categories. Cardholders must activate the categories to earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined eligible purchases during the quarter. After reaching the $1,500 spending cap, purchases earn the card’s standard 1% cash-back rate.

Cash back earned during the billing cycle is generally added to your rewards balance after your monthly statement closes. Once available, you can redeem your cash back at any time, with no minimum redemption amount, including for a statement credit or deposit into a bank account.

How do I activate my Discover 5% categories?

You can activate your Q4 categories through the Discover mobile app or your online account.

In the app, select your card, navigate to the rewards or cash-back section and tap “Activate Now.” On a desktop, log in to your Discover account and select “Activate Now” next to the Q4 bonus categories.

It’s a good idea to activate as soon as the categories become available so you don’t accidentally make an eligible purchase before registering.

If your Discover account has already migrated to Capital One, you can activate your Q4 categories through the Capital One app or your online account. The benefit and activation process remain the same.

How much cash back can I earn each quarter?

If you spend the full $1,500 quarterly limit on eligible purchases, you’ll earn $75 in cash back at the 5% rate. Multiply that by four quarters and you’ve got $300 of cash back in your pocket.

Once you’ve reached the $1,500 cap, additional purchases in the bonus categories earn the card’s standard cash-back rate of 1%.

New cardholders can get even more through Discover’s Cashback Match. At the end of your first year, Discover automatically matches all the cash back you’ve earned, with no minimum or maximum rewards.

So, if you earn the maximum $75 in cash back from the 5% categories in a single quarter, Discover would match that $75 at the end of your first year, bringing your total from those purchases to $150.

And because Cashback Match applies to all cash back earned during your first year, the match can apply across multiple quarterly bonus periods.

Discover it Student Cash Back applicants currently have another first-year opportunity: Through late September, new cardholders can earn a $100 statement credit after spending $300 on purchases in their first three months.

Is Discover’s 5% cash back retroactive?

No, Discover’s rotating-category bonus is not retroactive.

You must activate the categories before making eligible purchases. You’ll earn 5% cash back only on qualifying purchases made after activation during the applicable earning period.

For example, if you activate your Q4 categories on Oct. 15, an eligible restaurant purchase made Oct. 10 would not earn 5% cash back.

How can I maximize Discover’s rotating categories?

The best strategy is to activate your categories as soon as they’re available and then prioritize your Discover it Cash Back or Discover it Student for purchases that fall within the bonus categories.

For Q4 2026, that means looking at your expected spending on restaurants, entertainment and utilities and determining which expenses you can reasonably put on your card.

Because the $1,500 cap applies across all three categories, you don’t need to spend $1,500 in any one category. You can combine eligible purchases across the three categories until you reach the quarterly limit.

Just remember that Discover’s bonus categories shouldn’t automatically replace a card that offers a better return for a particular purchase. If another card in your wallet earns a higher rate or provides a more valuable benefit, compare the two before deciding which card to use.
