Maynooth University has announced the appointment of Professor David Cuberes as the new Head of the Department of Economics, effective September 1, 2026. He succeeds Dr. Aedín Doris. Professor Cuberes is known for his research in urban economics and economic growth. 

Maynooth University has announced that Professor David Cuberes will take up the role of Head of the Department of Economics effective September 1, 2026. This announcement came on August 31, 2026, marking a new chapter for the department.

Professor Cuberes is an internationally recognized economist whose research interests include urban economics, economic history, and economic growth. His work has scrutinized various aspects of city development across different nations, the impact of wars on urban populations, and household location decisions within cities. He has also studied issues such as gender inequality, democratic processes, and economic volatility.

He holds degrees from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona and the University of Chicago, and has served in academic positions at several  universities, including Clemson University and the University of Sheffield. In addition, he has advised prominent organizations like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

The university expressed its gratitude to outgoing Head, Dr. Aedín Doris, for her contributions and leadership in enhancing the department’s reputation and commitment to excellence in research and teaching.
