Jeff Staple’s famous series of “Pigeon” Nike SB Dunk Lows have celebrated the rats of the sky, and at least one Air Force 1 is about to pay tribute to the real thing.
The Nike Air Force 1 Low Black Rat does a convincing impression of the rodent’s fur. Faux fur forms the Swoosh, foxing and mustache — the latter features a mean set of eyes poking out. Black leather with a heavier degree of wrinkling than usual is used for the rest of the upper, while rat tail pink pops up via the “NYC” tongue patch logo, midsole “Air” mark and a translucent outsole.
For those that find this sneaker a tad too lifelike, another version of the AF1 will release with callouts to the subway and a much more subtle rat cue. Gray suede dresses the entirety of the upper with a matching midsole and another translucent pink outsole. Faint pink trim can also be made out on the Swoosh, while a pink suede ribbon on the heel hangs off at the end like a tail and a removable tag replicates the look of the Metrocard.
In the wider fur department, Nike recently dropped another Air Force 1 with heavy orange shag treatment reminiscent of Gritty, the mascot for the Philadelphia Flyers, and a purple follow-up is expected in the fall.
These iterations have come as part of a particularly playful streak for the classic sneaker that’s included prints galore, a resurgence in patent leather and ornamentation including loafer hardware and floral appliqués.
The recent revival of the Air Force 1 Low’s ’01 construction has also drawn rave reviews and will be subject to an increased volume in variants soon.
The Nike Air Force 1 Low Black Rat is expected to release during the upcoming holiday season. Further details including the Sku and pricing have yet to be confirmed, but Footwear News will keep you abreast of any updates.
