Moynat Unveils Artist-led Folding Paper Garden Pop-up at SKP Beijing

BLOSSOMING IN BEIJING: Moynat is continuing its relationship with Asian artists with a pop-up at SKP Beijing imagined with Chinese artist Jojo.

Running until Sept. 19 in the luxury mall’s first-floor atrium, the “Folding Paper Garden” installation revisits the French trunkmaker’s travel codes as a walk-through paper set imagined by the Qingdao-born and Beijing-based artist, whose real name is Sui Yuan.

Using folded paper to evoke its archival trunks, she zoomed in on Moynat’s monogram, creating a lightly pixelated version. “Especially in today’s high definition world, this blurring will give people different feelings,” she said.

A graduate of the Oil Painting Department at Capital Normal University, Jojo is best known for her practice between painting, sculpture and paper art, a medium that fascinates her for its fragility. She has built a following in China for her large scale works that explore individuality, the body and the city.

For the pop-up, the French trunkmaker has developed a dark grey version of its M collection canvas exclusively for SKP Beijing. The collection spans the Hobo and Mini Hobo styles, totes in three sizes, the 48H and Mini 48H travel bags, the newly introduced Moon Bag as well as trunks.

A range of small leather goods such as passport holders, cardholders and bag charms are also showcased in Jojo’s graphic “garden” of folds and layers.

The pop-up fits into Moynat’s push to work with artists and pop-culture creators. The house has already scored attention with tie-ups such as its hit collaboration with Japan’s Kazumasa Naga and Kasing Lung, the artist behind the Labubu character.

It is also continuing to use limited runs and art-driven capsules to build buzz and reach new audiences, having previously collaborated with Chinese stylist Lucia Liu and done a local 520 campaign with Tan Xiaodai and Tan Liliu, two dogs with massive online followings, which are owned by actor Tan Jianci.
