Aaron Glenn wants his defense to play fast, physical, and aggressive. He also wants it to play smart. Through two preseason games, the New York Jets appear to be striking that balance.
The Jets have committed only two penalties as a team so far this preseason, a notable achievement for a roster filled with young players competing for jobs. Even more impressive is what has happened in the secondary. According to Michael Nania, New York is one of only two NFL teams whose defensive backs have yet to be flagged. The Minnesota Vikings are the only other team that can make that claim.
That’s an encouraging development for a coaching staff led by defensive coordinator Brian Duker, defensive backs coach/pass game coordinator Chris Harris, and safeties coach Ryan Slowik. The clean play has accompanied productive results. The Jets’ defense shut out the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2 of the preseason and recorded two interceptions.

After struggling to generate takeaways at times last season, the early ball production has been a welcome sight. Of course, preseason statistics come with the usual disclaimers. The games don’t count, and the competition is often inconsistent.
Still, disciplined football travels. Glenn has consistently spoken about accountability and controlled chaos since arriving in New York. Through two preseason games, the Jets’ secondary appears to be embracing both concepts. That’s a positive sign with the regular season quickly approaching.
