Yale University has announced the appointment of Navin Kartik as the A. Douglas Melamed Professor of Economics, effective July 1, 2026. The appointment solidifies Kartik’s role within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Yale, where he joined in 2025 after a 17-year career at Columbia University.

Kartik, who holds a B.A. in Economics and Mathematics from Brandeis University and a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University, is noted for his impactful work in microeconomic theory, game theory, and information economics. His research explores critical concepts such as “incentive compatibility” and “single-crossing properties,” extending to practical applied issues like the decision-making processes of political candidates and the implications of test-optional admissions policies in academia.

Known for his contributions to strategic communication, Kartik has developed a theoretical framework addressing how misinformation affects effective communication among conflicting interests. His notable publications have appeared in leading economic journals such as the American Economic Review and Econometrica.

At Yale, he teaches courses on advanced economic theory and political economy, and has initiated a seminar titled “Elections: Preference and Information Aggregation.” His efforts are also evident in the establishment of the Political Economy Program at Yale’s Cowles Foundation, with supports research in political economy.

Kartik has also been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Lenfest Distinguished Faculty Award from Columbia University
