Cottonball Launches Prescription Skin Care Line With Six Products


Cottonball, a new prescription skin care line, is officially debuting Sept. 1 with a lineup of six stock keeping units.

The idea is to meld the efficacy of prescription skin care with the look and feel of luxury skin care. Think premium prescription skin care, coined Cottonball brand adviser Amy Keller Laird, also currently the senior vice president of beauty and wellness at Karla Otto.

“I don’t want to sacrifice one for the other,” she said. “I want this turbocharged efficacy of Rx, but I also want to love how it feels.”

To achieve this, Cottonball brought on cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson to help develop the formulas, all of which have the same proprietary base of a sterol, linoleic acid, and a vegan ceramide to support the skin barrier. All Cottonball treatments also include both high- and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid.

In addition to Robinson, Mona Gahara, M.D., a clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine, is Cottonball’s dermatology adviser.

The launch products include: VX.1 Advanced Anti-Aging & Repair Complex, VX.2 Wrinkle-Smoothing & Prevention Complex, VX.4 Daily Skin-Brightening Formula, VX.5 Undereye Smoothing & Brightening Balm, VX.6 Precision Neck-Sculpting Complex, and CX.1 Advanced Dark Spot Treatment.

Every customer completes a comprehensive dermatologist-developed, online assessment before receiving an individualized treatment plan from a board-certified dermatologist, which is then custom-compounded specifically for them. The treatment formulated for their skin will combine prescription-strength actives such as retinoids, brightening agents, and skin-supporting compounds.

Cottonball will launch alongside a blog, which aims to provide education around prescription skin care.

“The blog is about ingredients, about how do you work a prescription skin care line into your life. What’s the difference? One of our top blogs is what’s the difference between tretinoin and retinol. The answer is tretinoin is 10 to 20 times more effective, depending on what percentage you put in. It also has a higher percentage of side effects like dryness or irritation, but the blog then goes through all of the ways to offset that,” said Keller Laird.

Pricing ranges from $198 to $234 for a two-month supply. Its most expensive products are CX.1 Advanced Dark Spot Treatment and VX.6 Precision Neck Sculpting Complex. CX.1 is meant to be used in 12-week cycles to significantly reduce dark spots or melasma.
