Canada’s thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims, as well as with all those affected by the floods in Nepal and China. Global Affairs Canada (GAC) continues to monitor the situation in the region and takes the safety and security of Canadians and our own personnel abroad very seriously.

Registration of Canadians Abroad and Consular Assistance

 At this time, GAC is aware of approximately 30 Canadians and permanent residents in Nepal and the Tibet region whose whereabouts and well-being have not yet been confirmed. Given the extremely difficult circumstances on the ground, this number will fluctuate as new information comes in. Our consular officials are working urgently to establish contact with them and confirm their safety. They are also reaching out to travel agencies, local authorities and likeminded countries to gather additional information.

We are deploying five consular officials to Kathmandu to support Canadians and coordinate with local officials and partners. We will provide further resources as needed. In addition to working closely with Nepalese and Chinese counterparts, we are also coordinating with international partners and allies who also have citizens in the region.

As of August 27, 2026, there are 858 Canadians registered as being in Nepal and 18 Canadians in the Tibet Autonomous Region, China, according to Global Affairs Canada’s Registration of Canadians abroad system. These numbers provide only an estimate of Canadians in the region as registration is voluntary. They may also include individuals who have registered with no plans to travel. Therefore, the number of registrants for any given area may not be fully representative of the number of Canadians actually residing in or visiting that area.  

Global Affairs Canada is in contact with humanitarian partners and stands ready to contribute to humanitarian efforts as needed.

Canada extends its sincere thanks to Nepali and Chinese officials for their ongoing search and rescue efforts and for the assistance provided to Canadians and all those affected by this devastating event. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted, and we stand in solidarity with them as they recover from this tragedy.  

Travel advice to Canadians

Our Travel Advice and Advisories (TAAs) for Nepal and China were updated on August 27 to add information on the ongoing risk of further flash flooding and mudslides along the Nepal-China border.  Canadians should regularly consult the TAAs for up-to-date information about the situation and sign up with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service to receive important updates directly.
