The UBC computer science professor is familiar with Science World thanks to serving a stint on its board of directors
Science World has hired UBC computer science professor Gail Murphy to be its new president and CEO starting Oct. 5.
Murphy recently concluded a nine-year stint as UBC’s vice-president of research and innovation. She has spent much of her career as a researcher in software engineering, creating tools to help software developers manage large codebases and work more productively, according to Science World.
Her business experience includes co-founding Tasktop Technologies, a UBC spinout venture that provided enterprise software solutions and raised US$100 million in seed funding before Plainview acquired it in 2022.
Murphy is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and at the Association for Computing Machinery. She has served on several boards including for Canada’s Digital Technology Supercluster, Digital Research Alliance of Canada, Greater Vancouver Board of Trade and Innovate BC.
She was also on Science World’s board between 2019 and this spring, according to her LinkedIn.
“I am truly excited to welcome Gail as our next president and CEO,” said Ivor Luk, chair of Science World’s board of directors. “As a past board member, her deep familiarity with Science World’s mission makes her uniquely qualified to lead the organization. She has demonstrated leadership, a passion for STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) education and extensive experience as a tech leader and company founder, making her a natural fit for the position.”
Murphy said she thinks it is an exciting time for Science World as it evolves thanks in part to a fundraising campaign.
“Science and technology touch every part of our lives,” she said. “I am looking forward to working with the Science World team to make that knowledge accessible to everyone, building stronger, more informed communities.”
Former Science World CEO Tracy Redies announced her retirement in February. She left her post in the spring.
