United Airlines Unveils 2 New Long-Haul Airbus A321XLR Routes: See Flights Now

United Airlines has unveiled two new long-haul Airbus A321XLR routes, which will become the carrier’s first such services on the variant. The high-premium narrowbody will be deployed from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to both Amsterdam and Dublin, beginning in December. Right-sizing winter demand with lower capacity will help with loads, yields, and overall performance in the off-season.

The initial long-haul links were disclosed while United announced its 11 new and returning routes to Europe, along with the airline’s expansion from San Francisco to Japan. All will begin next summer. Five of these markets will see the XLR: Luxembourg, Ibiza, Marseille, Toulouse, and Valencia.

On December 1, the Star Alliance member is set to debut the XLR from IAD to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) and Dublin Airport (DUB). The 150-seater will replace the 176-seat Boeing 757-200 to DUB and the 203-seat 767-300ER to AMS. Both routes will still be served daily. When writing, United’s schedules and booking engine had not been updated to reflect the change. It is also not entirely clear if the XLR will only operate during the winter, although that is very likely.

Ch-aviation shows that United currently has one XLR, which arrived in May 2026. Five more frames are due to be delivered by the end of the year, along with 15 in 2027. They’ll all have the same configuration. The layout includes 20 Polaris business seats (1-1), with each lie-flat suite having privacy doors and aisle access.

Then there are 12 seats in Premium Plus (2-2) along with 34 in Economy Plus (3-3; 33-34″ pitch) and 84 in regular economy (3-3; 30″ to 31″). One row in Economy Plus has a fixed table that blocks the middle seat. Larger overhead bins are available, along with a snack bar at the back of the aircraft.

Winter Capacity Will Be Down A Lot

Switching from the 757-200 to the XLR to DUB means the number of available seats will now be 15% lower. This will help performance, as the US Department of Transportation (DOT) shows that United only filled 72.3% of seats between IAD and DUB from November 2025 to February 2026. Not many flights were available in January or in early February.

It is even more significant than ‘just’ that. The airline will now have a much more premium winter offering on this link to Ireland’s busiest airport. 21% of seats will now be in Polaris and Premium Plus. That’s up from only 9% on the 757-200, which does not have Premium Plus and which has an older business product.

AMS will be very different. Capacity will be down by more than a quarter, which is a substantial reduction. But it is needed. The DOT indicates that the route had a load factor of just 61.6%, which was, of course, exceptionally low. 54 of the 767-300ER’s seats are in Polaris and Premium Plus. The XLR has 32. Those cabins, as a proportion of the total, will thus fall from a considerable 27% to 21%.

Houston May See The XLR To South America

Unsurprisingly, a lot of the variant’s focus has been and probably will always remain on IAD and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Europe. However, United’s Patrick Quayle, SVP Global Network Planning and Alliances, has disclosed that Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is likely to see the XLR on routes to South America, although not until more frames are delivered.

While Airbus touts the XLR’s range as 4,700 nautical miles (8,704 km), this is entirely theoretical. Like all manufacturers, it is based on everything being as light and as optimized as possible to show off the equipment. It does not reflect real-world operations and never will. It is just the brochure range.

Iberia says that its 182-seat XLRs have a real-world range of about 3,900 nautical miles (7,223 km). As United’s frames only have 150 seats, they will be much lighter and thus able to fly further. As such, most of South America would be reachable from IAH on the XLR. Use of the variant is likely to be more about replacing existing equipment than launching new routes. Indeed, booking data via OAG shows that IAH’s largest unserved city in South America is Guayaquil, but it is quite a small market (14,000 round-trip passengers last year).
