Actor Tim Curry has died at the age of 80.

Born on April 19, 1946, in Grappenhall, Cheshire, England, Curry studied drama and English at the University of Birmingham before beginning his professional career in theater.

His first major professional engagement came with the original West End production of the musical ‘Hair’ in 1968. There, he met Richard O’Brien, who would go on to write ‘The Rocky Horror Show.’

Curry’s breakthrough arrived in 1973 when he originated the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the stage production of ‘The Rocky Horror Show.’ He reprised the role for the 1975 film adaptation, ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show,’ a movie that would initially struggle with mainstream audiences before becoming one of the most enduring cult films in cinema history.

Curry’s career extended far beyond ‘Rocky Horror.’ He appeared in films including ‘Annie,’‘Legend,’‘Clue,’‘The Hunt for Red October,’‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’ and ‘Muppet Treasure Island.’

In 1990, he delivered another career-defining performance as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the television adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘IT.’ His unsettling portrayal of the supernatural killer clown became one of the most recognizable horror performances of the era.

Curry also became a prolific voice actor, lending his distinctive voice to numerous animated films, television series and video games. His work earned him a Daytime Emmy Award, while his stage career brought three Tony Award nominations.

On Broadway, Curry appeared in productions including ‘Amadeus’ and ‘Spamalot,’ playing King Arthur in the latter. His work across theater, film and television demonstrated a remarkable ability to move between comedy, horror, drama and musical performance.

In 2012, Curry suffered a major stroke that significantly affected his mobility. Although the stroke curtailed much of his on-screen work, he continued performing through voice acting and occasional appearances, remaining closely connected with the audiences who had followed his career for decades.

Curry chronicled his life and career in his 2025 memoir, ‘Vagabond,’ reflecting on his experiences in theater and Hollywood and the challenges he faced following his stroke.
