Selling Enzo might be best for Chelsea as well as the midfielder

Chelsea are being pushed to sell Enzo Fernandez by the player and by Man City‘s pressure. But might it also be a sensible move?

Right now, Enzo’s move to Man City hangs in the balance. Chelsea are working out whether to sell him or keep him.

Liam Twomey’s piece for the Athletic suggests that, far from being forced into it, the Blues might actually consider it a blessing in disguise.

This is the conclusion we came to long ago too. Enzo is a really good player – one of the best in this squad. He was a foundational piece bought early on in this project, with the idea to build the team around him.

However, the emergence of Cole Palmer tore up those plans. Managers have tried various setups, but effectively they’ve all reached the same conclusion: Enzo can’t play in a simple midfield two with Moises Caicedo. They need a third with them. If you use a third with them, there’s no room for Palmer to play centrally – he has to go wide in a three.

This is especially true in the back five system that Xabi Alonso looks set to play. Caicedo needs to be played with someone who covers more ground and has more defensive instincts than Enzo.

Of course it might be possible to make it work – but given there is now a chance to move him on for a profit, and given he wants to go, it would seem the sensible course of action.
