Milliner Philip Treacy to Be Honored at amfAR Gala in London

HATS OFF: Philip Treacy is to be honored for his hats – and his heart – at the second annual amfAR London on Oct. 16.

The renowned English milliner is to receive the amfAR Award of Excellence, while veteran actor Jeremy Irons will be handed the amfAR Award of Inspiration.

The event, which takes place during Frieze London and the BFI London Film Festival, is to raise funds for amfAR’s mission to support HIV research and advance global health.

According to a release shared first with WWD, Treacy is being recognized for his “devoted support of scientific research, particularly in neuro-oncology, as well as his creative impact and contributions to art and fashion.

“As a longtime patron of Brain Tumour Research, Treacy has supported initiatives including Wear A Hat Day and helped shine a spotlight on the urgent need for greater investment in research and new treatments,” amfAR said.

A longstanding supporter of amfAR, the Foundation for AIDs Research, Irons is to be recognized for his broad commitment to humanitarian causes, including prison rehabilitation and cancer research.

The Inspiration Award has previously been picked up by Tracey Emin, Richard Gere, Ava DuVernay, Cher, Miley Cyrus and Charlize Theron.

Last year’s gala raised $2.1 million, and the event will return to The Chancery Rosewood, the presenting sponsor.

AmfAR estimates more than 100,000 people in the U.K. are living with HIV. The organization is supporting multiple studies targeting new approaches to HIV cure and long-term remission, along with research into cancers, autoimmune disorders, and other chronic conditions.
