Bouclé bed frames, sometimes called cloud beds, are characterized by their padded frame that’s completely upholstered in a bouclé (pronounced boo-KLAY) fabric. What is bouclé fabric?

Bouclé is a fabric made of a type of textured, looped yarn. Usually made of wool, polyester, cotton, or a blend, bouclé fabric is spun in a way that gives it a soft, fleecy feel that’s ultra-touchable, higher-end than actual fleece, and textured. You’ll usually find bouclé in white or other light colors.

How to clean bouclé fabric:

Bouclé’s texture can attract loose dirt, so vacuuming with a bristle brush is usually the most effective way to clean it. If you get spills or stains, start by blotting up excess moisture, then spot-clean with a cloth and a simple, bleach-free cleaning solution, like a mix of laundry detergent and water.

What should you consider when shopping for an upholstered bed frame?

When shopping for upholstered bed frames like bouclé beds, we look for a few details. We prioritize furniture made by hand and/or made in the US or North America. We also look for pieces made of solid wood or hardwood rather than composite or synthetic woods — FSC-certified wood is a plus, meaning it comes from sustainably managed forests. 

When it comes to bouclé fabric, we look for fabrics made with cotton, wool, or recycled polyester rather than virgin polyester. Most bouclé fabric is made with polyester, which gives it softness and durability, but we keep an eye out for recycled materials, natural blends, and fabric certifications like OEKO-TEX and GREENGUARD to ensure no harmful chemicals are present.

What else should we look for in cloud beds? Storage! Just because you’re getting a chunky bedframe doesn’t mean you have to be without underbed storage. Several beds on this list have storage drawers or bases that lift completely up with hydraulic or gas-lifting mechanisms.
