Ontario could unveil new U.S. trade measures following Ford-Carney talks

The federal government is expected to announce retaliatory tariffs against the United States on Tuesday, according to a source in-the-known, putting more details behind Carney’s pledge to respond dollar-for-dollar to U.S. duties on Canadian goods.

Ontario is preparing to announce its own measures in response to escalating U.S. tariffs after Premier Doug Ford speaks with Prime Minister Mark Carney, as Ottawa gets ready to unveil a new round of retaliation against Washington.

The federal government is expected to announce retaliatory tariffs against the United States on Tuesday, according to a source in-the-known, putting more details behind Carney’s pledge to respond dollar-for-dollar to U.S. duties on Canadian goods.

Four federal ministers, including Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne and Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu, are expected to announce the measures Tuesday morning.

The announcement would include benefits to supporting Canadian workers affected by the trade dispute.

Premiers are expected to be briefed on the federal measures during a call Tuesday.

Ford indicated Monday that his government is prepared to introduce measures of its own, after discussing the next steps with Carney.

The premier has increasingly pushed for Canada to take a harder line against the United States, saying that retaliation should go beyond simply matching American tariffs and should instead target areas where the U.S. economy is particularly dependent on Canada.

Ontario has several potential levers at its disposal.

Earlier this Monday, Ford has raised the possibility of using electricity exports to the United States as leverage, while also pointing to Canadian energy and critical minerals as areas where the country holds significant economic power.

Speaking Monday, Ford said he wanted to first hear from the prime minister before determining Ontario’s next move.

Now sources suggest that the province could announce additional measures following Tuesday’s federal announcement and discussions between Carney and the premiers.

The premier’s office didn’t reply to a request for comment.
