U.S. President Donald Trump says he will hike tariffs on all vehicles, auto parts and steel from Canada to 50 per cent on Jan. 1.

The assertion came as 50 per cent tariffs took effect on a host of other Canadian goods on Saturday after trade talks between Canada and the United States broke down.

In a post on Truth Social today, Trump lashed out at Canada, accusing the country — without presenting evidence — as being “among the worst nations in the world to deal with.”

Trump says Canada is “entitled” and repeated his assertion that his country doesn’t need Canada, whereas Canada needs the United States.

On Saturday, Carney accused the U.S. of trying to introduce last-minute measures which could have restricted Canada’s ability to do deals with other countries.

Carney promised to retaliate on the latest tariffs the U.S. imposed on Saturday, with dollar-for-dollar tariffs by Sept. 8.
