Adam Lyth’s half-century backed up George Hill’s five-wicket haul as Yorkshire and relegation rivals Hampshire continued to trade blows in their County Championship clash.

Yorkshire were forced to be patient for much of the day, with Tom Prest and Nick Gubbins typifying a defensive Hampshire batting approach.

But the hosts could only secure a 24 run first-innings lead as Hill picked up his second five-for of the season – both coming against Hampshire.

Lyth, who had earlier picked up his 50th first-class wicket, led the counter with 51 as the visitors built out a 111-run lead, but losing five wickets meant the game remained in the balance.

Having lost four poles the previous evening, it was paramount for their chances in the game that Gubbins and Prest hung around for as long as possible.

They answered that demand by patiently blocking and were unmovable for the first 90 minutes of the day – between them, they soaked up 266 deliveries.

Gubbins only scored two boundaries in his 149-ball 38, whereas Prest occasionally indulged in an offside boundary – the dry and invariable nature of the pitch meant batters couldn’t put their guard down.

In that hour and a half, they were chanceless, but that didn’t mean Yorkshire didn’t feel aggrieved at missing out on a wicket.

Prest’s straight drive should have been a simple single, but a fantastic George Hill stop and Gubbins turning him around created panic. Hill’s throw struck a retreating Prest as he ran down the middle of the pitch. Yorkshire cried ‘obstructing the field’ but it fell on deaf ears.

The visitors did make the breakthrough shortly after, when Lyth’s off-spin were introduced to the left-handed Gubbins. The match-up was perfect for the bowler as 14 dot balls was followed by an edge to slip.

Prest was bowled through the gate by Lyth six overs later, but Ben Brown and Felix Organ took up the vigil with another dead-bat partnership.

They moved the score up by 25 in 16 lifeless overs before leg-spinner Jafer Chohan bowled Brown for his maiden first-class wicket.

The afternoon session was briefly paused twice as a helicopter bringing Indian politician Revanth Reddy to meet with representatives of GMR, Hampshire’s owners, landed and took off from the Nursery Ground.

Hill had been metronomic to pick up three wickets on the first evening, and was rewarded with two tail-end wickets – wonderfully clipping the top of the lively Andrew Neal’s off stump and pinning Kyle Abbott lbw – to take him to a seventh career five-for.

Ben Coad rounded things out by dismissing Organ to give the hosts a 24-run lead.

The advantage was reversed in barely seven overs, as Will Luxton showcased some sweet striking, while Lyth initially dropped anchor.

Despite Luxton and Sam Whiteman getting bowled, the evening was the first period in the match where scoring flowed easily.

Hampshire created opportunities – a dropped catch at second slip, a chance between keeper and first slip, and a variety of edges that dropped short – but the evening belonged completely to Lyth and Yorkshire.

The opener played more shots as his innings went on, largely abetted by wide bowling to reach his 124th career fifty in 95 balls.

But the match took another dramatic swing in the last five overs of the day as Lyth edged Felix Organ to slip and nightwatchers Ben Cliff and Chohan falling.

One question mark for Yorkshire is over Jonny Bairstow – who had to leave the field after suffering a finger injury while keeping. Due to updates to the replacement rule, he can no longer be replaced permanently in the match, if the damage was to prevent him from batting.
