The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, today issued the following statement:
“Canada has been a leader in global education for decades. We know that stronger, more inclusive education systems not only help communities succeed economically, they also promote peace, improve security and drive better health and climate outcomes.
“Strengthening girls’ education is one of Canada’s top priorities. Through the Charlevoix Education Initiative established in 2018, Canada has helped over 4 million girls benefit from high-quality learning opportunities.
“Canada is committed to ensuring that refugees and young people who are displaced can continue their learning, even in crisis and conflict settings. Technical and vocational education and training programs also play a pivotal role in helping students develop in-demand skills, learn about emerging technologies and prepare for the job market. For example, Canada proudly supports the Generation Unlimited Green Rising and Digital Initiative, which is helping millions of young people build digital skills and connect with relevant job opportunities. We are proud to work with partners to build stronger education systems that leave no one behind.
“This year’s International Day of Education theme highlights how advances in artificial intelligence [AI] will continue to impact both teachers and learners. While Canada and our partners recognize the risks that AI presents, we also see the incredible potential for AI to help break down language barriers, reduce administrative burdens and provide new learning opportunities for remote communities and students with special needs. And through Canada’s Presidency of the UN’s Economic and Social Council, we are working to harness AI to accelerate work towards the Sustainable Development Goals, including improving access to quality education.
