Tomb Raider: Catalyst Gets New Release Window

Early 2028 sounds a lot better than just 2028

After initially being announced for a 2027 release, Tomb Raider: Catalyst was delayed last month into the nebulous window of 2028. Thankfully, IP owner Embracer Group has now given fans more information on when exactly they’ll be able to play Lara Croft’s next original adventure.

As part of the company’s latest earnings report, Embracer discussed release plans for its 27/28 fiscal year. This included Tomb Raider: Catalyst, which the company expects to release before the end of that fiscal year. In non-business terms, that means the game will be released by April 2028. That is, of course, if it doesn’t get delayed again. Catalyst will be the first entirely new game in the series since 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider completed the Survivor Trilogy.

Tomb Raider: Catalyst will also be the next chapter in the franchise’s unified timeline that merges the Survivor Trilogy with all previous Tomb Raider games. For lore heads, that means Catalyst takes place after the events of 2008’s Tomb Raider: Underworld. Since developer Crystal Dynamics was acquired by Embracer Group in 2022, the studio has been hit by a series of layoffs. The most recent round occurred this March and affected 20 employees.

In the meantime, Tomb Raider fans can still look forward to playing Legacy of Atlantis, a remake of Lara Croft’s very first adventure, when it’s released on Feb. 12, 2027. The remake was announced alongside Catalyst in 2025. Legacy of Atlantis was originally slated for release this year but was also delayed to its current date.

The Embracer earnings report didn’t just reveal a narrower release window for Tomb Raider: Catalyst. It also revealed that Darksiders 4 and the next game in the Kingdom Come franchise are planned for release before the end of the 27/28 fiscal year. Embracer writes that Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 sold quite well, so it is unsurprising that the company wants to invest more in the franchise.
