American Airlines’ AI Is Rebooking Passengers Onto Later Flights Without Asking Them

American Airlines is seeing increasing backlash over the mistakes of its relatively new artificial intelligence booking software. The program is designed to make it easier for delayed travelers to catch connections when their initial departure falls behind schedule. In some cases, it’s been changing itineraries erroneously and creating headaches for flyers.

The specific issue is with the AURA and Connect Assist systems, which automatically rebook passengers and delete their seat assignments without a requested change. A View From The Wing reported that both Washington Post correspondent Mark Thiessen and media consultant Beverly Hallberg experienced virtually identical dilemmas earlier this week.

The automated rebooking engine was rolled out in 2023 to pilot the system that expanded in 2025 when the Connect Assist AI was introduced. In 2026, the AI expanded nationwide to cover six major hubs, adding Chicago (ORD), Miami (MIA), Philadelphia (PHL), and Phoenix (PHX). It seems that with that expansion, American has given full authority to the AI agent to decide if an itinerary should be changed without a human in the loop to supervise.

One of the core administrative motives for adopting the AI was to systematically reduce the workload of airport personnel. The transition to greater autonomy and schedule management is intended to be more efficient than being managed by gate agents, especially when there are major disruptions caused by inclement weather or other issues. However, because the software functions with absolute authorization, the software locks frontline employees out from reversing the changes.

Hallberg stated on X that she had to call American’s ticket office to fix the issue. She had time to do so because she spent an extended time waiting after AI incorrectly altered her original booking. Thiessen expressed his frustration with the AI-induced delay in these comments on X:

“I’m landing, and my connecting flight is still in Chicago with an hour to spare and now I’m not on it! Since when do you change my itinerary without asking?”

Time Savings or Another Source of Travel Risks?

To American, a human checking the system introduces friction that slows down the ability to quickly fill empty seats before boarding. American’s AI agents are designed to maximize seat occupancy as much as they are traveler convenience. That means that the automatic rebooking is incentivized to swap a passenger’s seat the second a delay threshold is triggered. The airline can reassign that inventory to standby passengers or sell for revenue-generating upgrades.

What the airline classifies as an efficient, revenue-maximizing acceptable margin of error translates into an inconvenient or even disastrous travel risk for individual passengers. The operational reality of American’s automated rebooking is seen as a clear case of asymmetric risk to the travelers who have been displaced. In a market with limited competition, the airline can absorb bad consumer reviews as long as the AI successfully lowers labor costs and maximizes seat revenue.

The Cost of Doing Business for Corporate

American has largely deflected public criticism by framing its AI as a major technological success. From a macro-operational standpoint, a statistical model that is right 90% of the time is generally a success. If the AURA and Connect Assist algorithims incorrectly bump the remaining 10% of travelers who actually made it to the gate on time, that appears to be considered an acceptable error rate.

Since they automated customer relations in 2023, the airline has also erected a digital barrier against customer frustrations. This insulation makes it even easier to ignore complaints when the AI fails. Travelers frequently have no choice but to fly American due to their dominance in fortress hubs like Charlotte (CLT) or Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW). By taking the rebooking power away from gate agents and leaving customers with no alternative except to wait on hold for one of the few human agents still reachable by phone.

If the automated system keeps planes tightly packed and on time, Wall Street rewards the company, and fixing the bugs that leave flyers stuck at the gate becomes a low priority. The corporate ambivalence of this calculus matches American’s low customer review ratings because major legacy airlines dominate the market and passenger satisfaction is secondary to macro metrics.
