Editor’s Note: As parents, we know how unsettling news about infant botulism and formula recalls can feel. While these incidents are extremely rare, infant botulism is treatable when caught early—and it isn’t only linked to formula feeding, but can also come from everyday environmental exposures. If you’ve formula-fed your baby and are feeling anxious, please be gentle with yourself: you’re doing an amazing job, and the very best you can.

We understand how overwhelming all the information online can be (trust us, we feel the same). That’s why we love this post from Dr. Max Goldstein, which offers clear, science-backed guidance on how to monitor your child.

Below, our guide highlights trusted organic formula options and simple feeding practices to help you feel confident and supported. These are brands our editors personally use and trust with their own babies. And as always, check in with your pediatrician if you have any questions about your baby’s health or the recent recalls.

We’re not just editors; we’re also moms. These are our favorite organic baby formulas that are safe for various budgets.

Your baby deserves the very best — and yes, that absolutely includes formula. It’s safe, nutrient‑dense, and a smart choice for many families. If you’re sorting through hundreds of formulas, here are the key criteria we believe matter most, grounded in science.

What should you look for in organic baby formula?

  • The basis of infant formula is carbs, but what you’ll want to look out for is whether it’s in the form of lactose or processed sugar (like corn syrup found in many American brands). In the EU, formula manufacturers are restricted from using rice syrup, table sugar, and other artificial sweeteners. Lactose, however, is naturally present in breast milk and is most commonly sourced from dairy.
  • Preservatives are common in USA-made formulas, but you won’t find them in European brands. Of course, preservatives can be dangerous to anyone’s health, especially a baby’s.
  • Some formulas use palm oil and soy oil, both of which can cause side effects (though soy oil is known to be a bit more harmful). In this case, avoid both whenever possible, but go for palm oil if necessary.
  • For our UK and European friends, the fatty acid DHA is required in all formulas. DHA is actually found in breast milk, and it’s considered important in eye and brain development. Because the US has no minimum standard for DHA in infant formula, these formulas are often only available in Europe. For this reason, please beware of third-party sellers offering DHA formulas in the United States.
  • Finally, look for natural and organic ingredients like organic whey powder and starch for the safest, most sustainable options.

To make your search a little easier, we’ve rounded up these organic brands that make formula-feeding easier. Remember: It’s always okay to opt for formula, even from day one! Because fed is best.
