Summer is fast approaching, and many Canadians are planning to travel abroad. The situation in the Middle East is presenting challenges that travellers around the world need to be aware of. Fuel shortages may lead to flight cancellations and disrupt access to local goods and services at your destination. Your travel plans could be disrupted if you are travelling to the Middle East, going through the region or even if you are not travelling to the Middle East. You should carefully assess the risks of travelling abroad under the current circumstances and plan accordingly.
If you do decide to travel abroad, you should check the situation with your airline or travel agent, both before departure and upon your return. Find out more about global travel disruptions, fuel impacts and security risks.
Travelling is a personal choice, and Canadians must make informed decisions, particularly those that affect their safety and well-being while abroad. The Government of Canada’s ability to provide assistance may be limited. Find out more about the consular services we can and can’t provide.
Before you pack your bags, the Government of Canada would like to remind you that Travel.gc.ca offers a wealth of information and advice to help you plan a safe trip and be prepared for the unexpected. Follow these tips to make sure you are well prepared and better able to deal with the unexpected while you are outside Canada:
- Verify your travel insurance coverage
- Ensure your travel insurance includes coverage for trip cancellation and interruption.
- Before leaving Canada, read the terms and conditions of your policy carefully, particularly the limitations, exclusions and policy requirements. Confirm with your provider if there are any limitations or exclusions related to fuel shortages or regional conflicts, as these may not be covered.
- Plan your finances
- If you choose to travel, you must be prepared in case you become stranded abroad
- This includes having enough funds to support yourself and enough medication to last longer than planned
- No financial assistance will be provided by the Government of Canada
- It is therefore your responsibility to make alternative arrangements and ensure that your financial situation allows you to extend your stay abroad, if necessary
- Check the necessary documents

- Ensure that your passport and other travel documents are valid for the required duration, allowing sufficient time in case you need to extend your stay unexpectedly
- If necessary, obtain a visa or an electronic travel authorization before you leave
- Keep your travel documents in a safe place
- Be aware of the risks of travelling during hurricane season
