What’s happening on (and off) Parliament Hill, plus the news you need to start your day.
He may be operating on what his office describes as a “reduced schedule” while fulfilling “personal commitments” in Italy this week, but Prime Minister Mark Carney took to social media on Sunday afternoon to confirm that the federal government is “working with” with British Columbia to “support people who have been forced from their home and communities across the province” amid the latest wave of wildfires.
“To everyone impacted by these wildfires, and to the brave firefighters and first responders on the front lines: Canada is with you,” he added.
His X post came several hours after Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski confirmed that she had approved the B.C. government’s request for emergency assistance “to provide shelter and accommodations for people who have been forced to leave their homes due to wildfires across the province, especially those in the region around Summerland and Peachland.”
She also noted that she had “tasked federal officials, led by the Government Operations Centre at Public Safety Canada, to work with the Province to ensure support reaches those who need it most.”
Later today, Olszewski is set to join Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Rebecca Alty in Inuvik to highlight new “infrastructure investments” at the Mike Zubko Airport before taking questions from reporters, who will likely press for an update on the wildfire situation. (2:30 p.m. MT)
Meanwhile, Secretary of State (Nature) Nathalie Provost teams up with fellow Quebec Liberal MPs Caroline Desrochers and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne to promote the Canada Strong Pass during a mid-morning visit to La Mauricie National Park, which is located just outside Shawinigan in Champagne’s home riding of Saint-Maurice — Champlain, Que. (10:45 a.m.)
Also today:
- Defence Minister David McGuinty will “mark” what the advisory is billing as a “major milestone” for the Regulatory and Security Science Main (RSS Main), the “world-class scientific research hub” at Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s Ottawa laboratory, which, according to the background documentation, “is replacing at least seven aging federal science facilities with new multi-purpose, modernized and sustainable facilities ,” and “will accommodate approximately 275 scientists and researchers from four science-based departments and agencies,” with the “first component” on track to open in 2031. (9 a.m.)
- Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon heads to Hamilton, Ont. to share the details of “new measures” that, as per the advisory, will “strengthen interprovincial trade of Canadian steel,” as well as “domestic supply chains.” (9:30 a.m.)
- Housing Minister Gregor Robertson starts the week by unveiling fresh federal “investments” that will “help businesses and organizations across British Columbia navigate trade disruptions and seize new opportunities” during a morning appearance in Burnaby, B.C. (11 a.m. PT)
Rounding out the roster, Canada – U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc was scheduled to return to Washington, D.C. today to pick up where he and Canada’s chief negotiator, Janice Charette, left off in their ongoing back-and-forth with senior U.S. officials over the latest round of tariffs that U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose, which would hit billions of dollars in Canadian exports with a new 50 per cent levy that is currently set to come into effect next week.
In a dispatch filed on Sunday afternoon, Canadian Press reports that the latest talks “have broadly covered the newly threatened duties, existing sectoral tariffs and renegotiations of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico agreement, or CUSMA,” according to LeBlanc’s spokesperson, Gabriel Brunet.
“In doing so, we are taking a Team Canada approach – working with provinces and territories, across party lines, to get the best deal for Canada,” Brunet told the wire service on Sunday.
