Only 80 Miles: Qatar Airways Launches World’s Shortest Airbus A350 Flights

Qatar Airways was the launch customer of both the Airbus A350-900 and the Airbus A350-1000. The airline is used to flying its array of widebody aircraft (including its A350s) on particularly short flights. They help to provide capacity to feed its Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) hub.

Each week, airlines from around the world submit schedule changes to Cirium Diio, OAG, and so on. These encompass many things, such as new routes, markets that have been eliminated, frequency and capacity increases or decreases, altered operating periods, and equipment swaps.

The oneworld member has scheduled the 283-seat A350-900 on the extremely short link from DOH to Bahrain International Airport (BAH). The airline’s schedule submission shows that this will take place on August 12 and 13, i.e., this week.

Flights will cover just 80 nautical miles (92 statute miles, 148 km) each way. Of course, that distance is based on the great circle. It does not include maneuvering when departing, cruising, or approaching. As such, the real-world distance will be higher. For a simple comparison, the distance is greater than between John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL).

Some will appreciate that deploying widebody aircraft on such short services is common in the Middle East and other parts of Asia. Qatar Airways occasionally uses the A350 between DOH and BAH. Schedule analysis for every month between January 2022 and August 2026 shows that the equipment appeared in 14 of the 56 months. As only one to 14 departures existed per month, it is uncommon equipment.

Just one in every 67 services saw the A350. Widebodies generally are not commonly used to BAH. In the same period, they only operated 7% of the flights. This is because Qatar Airways also has narrowbodies: currently the A320ceo and A321neo. As everyone knows, they are more suitable for such short hops. In contrast, fellow Gulf giant Emirates only has twin-aisle equipment.

DOH-BAH On August 12 & 13

Let’s narrow the focus to Wednesday, August 12, and Thursday, August 13. On those specific days, Qatar Airways only plans one departure between DOH and BAH. The carrier usually has three daily departures on the short hop, particularly on the 132-seat A320ceo. That is Qatar Airways’ lowest-capacity equipment.

Until the latest schedule update, the Boeing 787-8 was to operate twice daily on August 12, while the A320ceo was down for three daily services the next day. Now only the A350-900 will operate a daily rotation. On August 13, the 283-seater will help to overcome some of the lost capacity.

On August 12 and 13, only QR1102 will operate from DOH. This flight will leave at 1:00 PM and arrive in BAH at 1:55 PM local time. Returning, QR11093 will depart at 3:25 PM and return at 4:20 PM. Being deployed at these specific times means the flights will have good connectivity to/from multiple destinations in Asia, and the broader Middle East, in particular. Note that Gulf Air will have three to four daily services to help feed its BAH hub on both days, with all flights being on the A320ceo, A320neo, and A321neo.

The World’s Shortest Bookable A350 Service

Recall that DOH-BAH flights will cover 80 nautical miles (92 statute miles, 148 km) each way. It has overtaken DOH to Dammam’s King Fahd International Airport (DOH) as Qatar Airways’ shortest A350 operation across the airline’s entire network. That link covers 122 nautical miles (140 statute miles, 226 km) each way.

BAH-DOH is also the world’s new shortest bookable A350 service in 2026. Corendon Dutch Airlines has an even shorter link, but it is not bookable in its own right and, as such, doesn’t count here. On Tuesdays and Sundays, the leisure airline deploys an A350-900 between Bonaire and Curaçao in the Dutch Caribbean, with all flights obviously beginning and ending in Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS). The carrier uses equipment leased from World2fly.
