Marble Souls dares to ask what would happen if the bloke from Dark Souls got stuck in a physics-driven ball, and it’s out this year

FromSoft games famously often devolve into rolling around a big baddie. Marble Souls takes that a step further. Now, the rolling is the main event, not just a side effect of you not wanting to end up pancaked on the ground. You are a Dark Soulsy bloke in a Dark Soulsy world, but trapped inside a physics-driven ball and tasked with collecting lost souls. It looks cool.

Announced today, August 6th, by Mosa Lina publishers Stuffed Wombat, Marble Souls is set for release at some point before 2026 is out. “Instead of overcoming enemies, you’ll be forging your way through an interconnected open world, upgrading your physics driven marble to suit your own personal playstyle,” its devs wrote. “Mapping out your surroundings, collecting useful equipment and learning the ins and outs of your marble are not easy but Marble Souls is more about exploration and experimentation than rage-inducing progression loss.”

As you go, you level up by collecting lost souls to upgrade your character’s stats – which include the likes of accelerating, jumping, and rolling – and your marble itself. Rather than battling bosses, the challenge looks to be in finding shortcuts and opening up new routes to roll down.

Is it a funny premise that could wear out its welcome if the marble run isn’t continually throwing up fresh twists and environments to negotiate? Maybe, but it certainly looks more thoughtfully-designed than a one-dimensional joke game. The music in the trailer also sounds cracking, the sort of mournfully beautiful tunes you need when you’re doing your best impression of a medieval hamster.

If you fancy keeping tabs on Marble Souls as it rolls towards release, you can wishlist it on Steam.
