Today, 1.6 million more women than men are enrolled in four-year colleges and universities in the US, raising concerns that college-educated women will struggle to find suitable partners. This column presents evidence that college women have in fact sustained relatively stable marriage rates, in part by increasingly marrying non-college men. This pattern, combined with the economic decline of non-college men, has reduced the pool of economically stable partners for non-college women. The findings raise the question of whether policies that improve outcomes for less-educated men could also narrow class gaps in marriage and family formation.
