NDP nominates Stephen Tweedale in North Vancouver—Capilano federal byelection

VANCOUVER — NDP members in the federal riding of North Vancouver—Capilano have nominated longtime community activist and organizer Stephen Tweedale as the party’s candidate for the August 31 byelection, following a contested nomination vote.

Tweedale was born and raised in Vancouver and has been a North Vancouver resident for more than 25 years. Currently president of the North Vancouver—Capilano NDP riding association, he has spent years organizing on the North Shore as a volunteer, riding executive and campaign organizer, constituency staffer, and mentor to new activists.

“Stephen is a dedicated grassroots organizer who deeply understands the needs of residents on the North Shore,” said NDP Leader Avi Lewis. “He has spent years bringing people together and helping build our ground game in this riding. I’m thrilled to welcome him as a candidate and to support his campaign.”

At a virtual nomination meeting, Tweedale said he is running to deliver solutions that will bring down the cost of living and offer a progressive alternative to policies that have put corporate greed, wars and climate destruction ahead of communities.

“In this moment, we are each other’s hope,” Tweedale said. “We can change things when we show up for each other, get organized, and work together. I want to grow our support beyond our past successes by proving to the cynical, hopeless, and the discouraged that there is a better alternative.”

“I want to bring back the supporters who lent their vote to the Liberals in the last election and are now having a case of buyers’ remorse,” he added.
