Hey! You probably get a lot of asks, but I wanted to share some bleak news which will impact Northern Ontario. Canada recently (July 31) approved the Crawford Nickel Project, a proposed nickel mine near Timmins. According to the impact assessment, it’s going to decimate fish and bird populations in the area (including Lake Sturgeon), permanently. It says permanently in the report.
This will also greatly impact First Nations in the area, who rely on and respect the land. There was engagement and Indigenous knowledge was shared but not taken into account. It will destroy the homes of six communities. “Many sites of cultural significance and value will be irreversibly lost from the project, and related knowledge will not be passed down through generations.” This is in the report!!
You can read more about it here: https://iaac-aeic.gc.ca/050/evaluations/proj/83857?culture=en-CA
Thank you for sharing, if possible.
