American Airlines is the world’s largest carrier in multiple ways. The oneworld member’s schedule submission to Cirium Diio shows that it is also number one for international services from the US. However, American’s top international ranking only relates to short and medium-haul operations, which is due to considerable activity to Mexico and the Caribbean.

In the upcoming northern aviation winter season, which will run from October 25, 2026, to March 27, 2027, American plans an average of 391 daily departures beyond the US border. Activity has risen by nearly 4% compared to winter 2025/2026, with an average of 14 additional daily services.

American Will Begin These Four International Routes

They are summarized below. As all the routes have already been announced, this article simply summarizes the additions and provides some context to increase understanding. As they reflect what is known as of August 3, it is possible that other links may be announced. However, American, like most carriers, is now focused on planning next summer’s network.

They add to other recent international launches and resumptions, including two this week. Recent relaunches include flights from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Caracas and Maracaibo. The carrier returned to Venezuela in April 2026, and those intercontinental routes mainly, but not completely, use the Embraer E175 regional jet.

Notice flights from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) to the Mexican city of Oaxaca. It will be the first time the market has been served. But only four departures will exist for the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), leaving Arizona on October 29, October 30, November 3, and November 4. At 1,284 nautical miles (2,378 km), it will be the second-longest scheduled service from PHX to Mexico to date.

American From ORD To NRT

Earlier this year, American hinted that it would add another route from ORD, which is the world’s busiest airport for flights but not for passengers. It transpired that this would involve returning to NRT after a seven-year absence. Clearly, reintroducing a previously served market is a relatively low-risk option compared to launching a brand-new long-haul route.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, fellow oneworld member and joint venture partner Japan Airlines (JAL) has removed its ORD-NRT flights, with the last departure from the US taking place on March 27, 2027. That is the same day American will resume this long link, which has a maximum block time of 12 hours and 45 minutes. JAL will continue to fly daily between Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) and ORD on the Boeing 777-300ER, with that variant being excellent for considerable freight capacity.

Before officially announcing a return to ORD-NRT, American provided a blurry photo that was identified as being the Osaka Garden in Chicago. This led to speculation that service from ORD to Kansai International Airport (KIX), serving Osaka, could be coming, with that airport pair previously flown by JAL and United Airlines. Nonstop flights have not existed since 2007.

A Summary Of American’s International Operations

Recall that American has scheduled an average of 391 daily international departures for the northern aviation winter 2026/2027 season, running between October 25, 2026, and March 27, 2027. 63% of the services will be on narrowbody jets (excluding RJs), 20% will be on RJs, and 17% will be on widebody equipment.

312 international routes are planned. They will go from 22 US hubs, focus cities, and other airports. With an average of 150 daily departures, MIA will be by far the most-served airport for such activity. American will have 60 more departures than from the second-ranked Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). Heavily influenced by MIA’s critical role for flights to the Caribbean, Central America, and South America, American will fly to 81 international destinations from the Florida hub.
