Henry Cavill is producing a Warhammer 40K Space Marines series animated by the perfect studio

The Warhammer 40,000 blitz continues, and the franchise is receiving a new animated series from Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studios, and Games Workshop. The show will be executive produced by Henry Cavill, who is also leading Amazon’s upcoming live-action TV take on the war game written by Mike Flanagan.

According to a report from Variety, the animated series will be a spin-off of the anthology Secret Level, specifically its Space Marine-focused episode “And They Shall Know No Fear.” Blur Studios is returning to animate. Dave Wilson, who directed the episode, is the co-creator and director of the upcoming show. He’s developing it alongside screenwriter John Orloff (Master of the Air, Band of Brothers).

While details are sparse, the series will focus on The Deathwatch, an elite group of Space Marines who hunt down alien threats. It seems quite possible it will follow the same group of soldiers from the anthology episode, including Lieutenant Titus.

Secret Level creator Tim Miller is executive producing alongside Dave Wilson. Other executive producers include Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, Andy Smillie from Games Workshop, Natalie Viscuso, and Cavill. The show is being created in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios and Games Workshop, the steward of the Warhammer brand.

“And They Shall Know No Fear” was one of the most positively received episodes from the up-and-down anthology Secret Level, focusing on the well-known Space Marine Lieutenant Titus as he and his squad battle Chaos cultists. It is a brutal, laconic, and well-animated episode that, for better and worse, is the most Warhammer 40,000 thing possible.

The studio behind the episode, Blur, is particularly well-regarded in nerd circles for its 3D-animated cutscenes and promotional videos. The team handled Halo Wars‘ cinematics and several of the trailers for Star Wars: The Old Republic, like “Deceived” (which was also directed by Wilson).

Secret Level wasn’t conceived simply as an anthology. It was designed as a launchpad for larger stories,” Wilson said to Variety. “The response to the Warhammer episode was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right. This series gives us the opportunity to build on that foundation and tell a much larger story. I’ve wanted to tell a long-form story set in Warhammer 40,000 for more than 20 years, and I’m incredibly grateful to Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios for the opportunity to do it.”

As always, Games Workshop is busy spreading the word of the Imperium. On top of consistently releasing new miniatures for the tabletop war game, there are several Warhammer 40,000 video games in the works, including Dawn of War 4, Space Marine 3, a new Total War, Boltgun 2, and many others. Helldivers 2 recently received a crossover. Almost 40 years later, this dark sci-fi universe continues to strike a chord.
