I think that my hair has changed more in the last few years than it did in my previous three decades combined. Of course, hair has a natural growth cycle, and there have been years prior where my hair has felt a little bit frazzled due to over-styling or a bit dry due to too many holidays in the sun, but the combination of getting older and navigating postpartum hair loss twice means that the thick, resilient hair I once took for granted is now noticeably more fragile.
Yes, whilst I eventually managed to get the excessive hair shedding under control, the hair that has been left behind is undoubtedly more susceptible to breakage, way less forgiving of daily heat styling and generally feels a whole lot more brittle. I was close to chopping the whole lot off and embracing bob life when a hairstylist instead convinced me to overhaul my haircare routine first. You see, whilst I used to place a whole lot of emphasis on how my hair looked—whether that be products that minimise flyaways or bolster shine—my focus now needs to be on how to get my hair feeling stronger long-term.

Which is where a great hair-strengthening treatment comes in. Unlike your everyday conditioner, these formulas are designed to support weakened strands, strengthen the hair shaft and help reduce breakage over time. And that’s whether your hair has been compromised by bleach, heated hair tools, tight hairstyles or simply the natural changes that come with age and hormones. So over the past few weeks I’ve basically made it my mission to try as many treatments as possible to see whether they live up to their claims. Plus, I asked a hair expert for advice on what exactly I should be looking out for when choosing the best treatment.

The Best Strengthening Hair Treatments
1. Living Proof Moisture Rescue Mask
Living Proof
Moisture Rescue Mask
I swear by so many of Living Proof’s hair products, so it’s not a huge surprise that it was this very mask which convinced me I could continue to grow my hair out longer rather than cutting it short. It has a really rich, creamy texture that feels so nourishing on the hair, yet is entirely free from silicones, so I loved that there was no residue or coating left on my strands once it was rinsed cleanly away. It only takes five minutes to get to work in the shower, and I noticed that once I had dried and styled my hair felt so much smoother, with split ends at the roots and flyaways at the crown drastically minimised. I wouldn’t say that this would be a miracle worker if your hair is in an extreme state of fragility, but if you’re looking for a mask that will restore moisture levels and bounce, then it’s a reliable addition to your weekly routine.
Pros
- Leaves hair feeling bouncy and strong
- Minimises appearance of damaged ends
Cons
- Better as a maintenance treatment than intensive repair
2. Olaplex No.3 Plus Complete Repair Treatment
Olaplex
No.3 Plus Complete Repair Treatment
Samantha Cusick, celebrity hairstylist and Olaplex global ambassador, rates this cult-strengthening hair treatment as a weekly fix for all hair types. “It’s a pre-wash bond builder so you apply it to damp hair before you shampoo, leave it for a minimum of three minutes, and it gets to work rebuilding broken bonds from the inside out,” she explains. “It suits every hair type and the fact that it takes three minutes and fits into an existing wash routine means clients actually do it consistently, which is the whole battle won right there.” It’s a product that I return to whenever my hair feels particularly sorry for itself, and after just a few uses always notice how much stronger my hair is when brushing it out or styling it.
Pros
- Strengthens weak hair
- Results last for a few washes
- Works in 3 minutes
Cons
- You need to stick to it to see results
3. L’Oréal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths Hair Saviour Mask
L’Oréal Paris
Elvive Dream Lengths Long Hair Mask
As someone who’s trying to grow healthier hair rather than constantly cutting away damaged ends, this tub of nourishing treatment instantly appealed. Anything that cheekily claims it will help me save that extra 10cm of hair on the pot is right up my street. Enriched with vegetable keratin, castor oil and vitamins, it’s designed to support longer hair that’s beginning to show signs of wear through the mid-lengths and ends. It smells amazing (like all L’Oréal Paris products do) and does a really decent job at hydrating and adding shine to longer hair that can end up looking dull. It’s not the heaviest hitter on the list, but it does a great job at minimising flyaways and smoothing the frayed ends that can come with a longer length.
Pros
- Leaves hair silky, glossy and smooth
- Affordable
Cons
- Long hair lengths will go through this quite fast
4. Color Wow Dreaming Advanced Repair and Resurfacing Treatment
Color Wow
Dreaming Advance Repair and Resurfacing Treatment
I have textured hair that often feels quite rough to the touch, especially if I’ve been heat styling it a lot, so this is the treatment that I reach for when I want to really get that healthy hair feel. Rather than simply coating the hair with conditioning ingredients, it’s designed to resurface damaged strands, helping to actually smooth the cuticle so hair looks and feels healthier. And it gets to work in the shower. Despite only needing to leave it on for a couple of minutes, once I rinse this out, I always notice immediately how my hair feels so much sleeker. After blow-drying, the finished result is noticeably more polished, glossy strands with none of the fluffiness that I normally have. If you are always trying to rid damaged hair of frizziness or it always looks perpetually dry, then this will leave hair looking like a professional stylist has had their hands on it.
Pros
- Really smooths rough texture
- Reduces puffiness
5. Dove Scalp + Hair Therapy Density & Growth
Dove
Scalp + Hair Therapy Density & Growth 10-in-1 Strengthening Mask
I’ve become much more selective about richer masks since my hair became finer after postpartum shedding, so I really appreciate how lightweight this formula feels. It has a creamy, yoghurt-like texture that spreads easily through the lengths before rinsing away cleanly, leaving no heavy residue behind. Developed with ingredients that genuinely strengthen the hair, like amino acids, zinc and biotin, it strikes a good balance between repair and boosting softness and volume. My hair felt noticeably easier to brush after using it, while the ends looked smoother and less prone to that dry, wispy appearance I often struggle with. I’d recommend this to anyone looking for a budget-friendly option, but especially anyone who’s noticed their hair feels thinner than normal in recent months.
Pros
- Affordable
- Lightweight formula suitable for fine hair
Cons
- May not be rich enough for very dry hair
6. Amika The Kure Intense Bond Repair Mask
Amika
The Kure Intense Strength Repair Mask
I have used this hair treatment for years, and especially loved it in my twenties when my hair was really thick, and I used to find that most treatments and conditioners wouldn’t quench it. This has a really thick, buttery texture that immediately feels indulgent, but also makes it easy to coat every single strand of hair with the treatment. It does take some rinsing out, or you risk being left with residue, but once it’s all out, you will notice how much easier your hair is to style. Ends are smoother, tangles are reduced, and hair has a pleasing healthy weight to it that means whether you’re blow-drying or curling it will just hang beautifully. And whilst it will look amazing, you can rest assured that all those fatty acids and plant butters have helped to strengthen your hair against ongoing breakage too.
Pros
- Improves elasticity
- Great for thick hair
Cons
- Make sure to rinse out thoroughly
- Not the best for fine hair types
7. TypeBea R.4 Intense Bond Repair Leave-In Treatment
Typebea
R.4 Intense Repair Leave-In Treatment
As someone whose hair has become far more fragile over the past few years, I’ve become wary of leave-in treatments that promise repair but leave my new, finer texture feeling coated. Thankfully, this isn’t one of them. The silky cream has enough slip to glide through damp hair without feeling heavy, and I found it absorbed quickly without leaving behind any residue. Formulated with bond-building technology, it focuses on reinforcing compromised strands whilst keeping them soft and manageable. And I can’t deny that, as someone who all too often steps out of the shower post-hair wash to realise that I’ve forgotten to do a mask, the fact that this can be applied to clean, damp hair is very welcome. After first use, my ends looked sleeker, and it was much easier to brush through my hair without fear of breakage.
Pros
- Lightweight leave-in formula
- Strengthens and reduces breakage
Cons
- You might not love if you don’t like leaving products in hair
8. Oribe Gold Lust Transformative Mask
Oribe
Gold Lust Transformative Hair Masque
Even if you had no idea of the price tag, you couldn’t use this mask and not be impressed by how incredibly luxurious it feels. From the rich floral fragrance (something that Oribe does so well) to the velvety texture that melts into the hair, it feels like a sensorial experience and not just a treatment. Formulated with Oribe’s signature complex alongside nourishing botanical oils and strengthening proteins, it focuses on restoring softness while helping protect against future damage. And on my textured hair, it delivered exactly what I hope for from a weekly mask: smoother lengths, noticeably more shine and ends that looked sleek rather than fluffy. If you’re someone who enjoys their haircare to feel like a ritual, then this is every bit as luxurious as its reputation suggests.
Pros
- Moisturising mask for all hair types
- Enriched with nourishing oils and proteins
Cons
- It’s eye-wateringly expensive
9. Garnier Ultimate Blends Repairing Papaya Hair Food
Garnier
Ultimate Blends Repairing Papaya Hair Food 3-In-1 Hair Treatment Mask
There’s a reason that these Garnier hair treatments have become something of a high street favourite, and that’s because they’re affordable and they work. This one has a thick, smoothie-like texture that feels instantly comforting on dry hair, coating every strand without becoming difficult to rinse away. Enriched with papaya extract and nourishing oils, it focuses on replenishing moisture to help brittle lengths feel softer and more flexible, and it really does a great job at bringing tired hair back to life with very little effort. I also like that it can be used as a conditioner, mask or leave-in treatment, making it particularly good value if you’re looking for one product that works hard.
Pros
- Versatile, multi-use formula
- Affordable and a big tub
Cons
- A strong fruity fragrance that won’t appeal to all
Does Your Hair Need a Strengthening Hair Treatment?
Interestingly, unlike some hair treatments, there is no downside to adding a strengthening hair treatment to your routine—but there definitely are certain hair types that will benefit most from using one. “Anyone with colour-treated, bleached, heat-styled or chemically processed hair will need them most,” explains Cusick. “Any chemical process makes hair more porous and more vulnerable, and that’s where hair treatments become non-negotiable.”
As to how you know if your hair is fragile, Cusick says that the signs are pretty obvious. “Excessive breakage when you brush, ends that feel rough or look frayed, hair that snaps rather than springs back, colour that fades quickly between appointments, or that general lack of shine that makes hair look tired even when it’s clean,” she says. “If any of those sound familiar, your hair is telling you it needs some attention.” And that attention might just be in the form of a strengthening hair treatment.
How to Use a Strengthening Hair Treatment
Typically, I am not great at committing to hair treatments as I like all of my beauty routines to be fast and streamlined, but Cusick assures me that once a week is enough to improve the condition of your hair—but you do need to stick with it. “Consistency is everything. One treatment won’t transform your hair, but a committed weekly routine absolutely will, and once clients stick to it they are always amazed by the difference,” she says. And if your hair is in a particularly damaged state, then you can use the treatment more regularly to begin with before dialling down to just weekly maintenance.
How We Tested
Of course, not every treatment lives up to its claims. Which is why for this edit I put a whole range of strengthening hair treatments to the test to work out which ones genuinely left my hair feeling stronger, as well as whether they were easy to use, felt good on the hair, and provided good value for money. Plus, I called on Cusick to share her favourite masks too, of course.
