Only 63 Miles: British Airways’ 11 Shortest Boeing 777 Routes Revealed [Map]

British Airways (BA) is a big fan of the Boeing 777 family. The ‘Triple-Seven’ forms the backbone of the UK flag carrier and oneworld founding member’s fleet, with 43 777-200ERs (aged 26.4 years old on average) and 16 777-300ERs (aged 11.9 years old on average) at its disposal. For the most part, these US-built widebody jets are deployed on long-haul routes from London, but there are some exceptions.

Indeed, present scheduling data made available by Cirium, an aviation analytics company, shows that, between August and March 2027, BA’s 777s will be deployed on flights as short as 63 miles, with nine routes clocking in under 3,000 miles (1 mile = 1.61 km).

British Airways’ six shortest routes flown by jets from the 777 series are all located within the Caribbean and South America. However, they do not operate in isolation but, rather, as the second leg of one-stop itineraries originating in London, or vice versa. Antigua to Saint Kitts is the shortest, clocking in at 63 miles.

Flying out of St. Lucia, two more destinations are just a stone’s throw away: Grenada, at 118 miles, and Tobago, at 178 miles. BA’s 777s also fly further afield from St. Lucia to Georgetown in Guyana, 530 miles away, while, from Nassau, they fly 400 miles to Providenciales and 467 miles to Grand Cayman. Earlier this year, BA’s Chief Planning & Strategy Officer Neil Chernoff commented on the long-haul additions, including the Caribbean routes.

“We’re also increasing services across several high-demand routes around the world. Together, these changes represent a significant investment in our long-haul leisure network, adding even more options and choice for our customers.”

What About Out Of London?

When it comes to Boeing 777-operated flights out of its main hub at London Heathrow Airport (LHR), BA’s shortest route during the examined time period links the capital city of the UK with Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) in Spain. The Spanish capital is just 774 miles from London, although it is worth noting, if seeking out the 777 specifically, that these jets don’t serve every flight.

Indeed, while BA’s 777s will serve Madrid daily in August and September, the monthly frequency will gradually drop to a low of 11 in February before rising again. Elsewhere, the UK flag carrier’s only other 777-operated route from Heathrow that clocks in at fewer than 3,000 miles serves Abuja in Nigeria, some 2,958 miles away. On this route, passengers can expect the 777 every single day.

Just the other side of the 3,000-mile mark, the other relevant routes link London Heathrow with Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and London Gatwick with Accra in Ghana. These cities are located 3,072 and 3,138 miles from London, respectively. However, there is one more that is farther from London.

Indeed, returning to the theme of one-stop routes that originate in London but serve a second destination, British Airways also deploys the 777 from Heathrow to Buenos Aires via Rio de Janeiro. The type is deployed on this route (which, ironically, is one of BA’s longest in terms of end-to-end distance) on a daily basis, with the leg from Buenos Aires to Rio measuring 1,240 miles.

The advantage of this arrangement is that British Airways can reliably serve two South American destinations in one go, both of which have reasonable demand but might not warrant their own nonstop flights. Fifth-freedom flyers can also fly on this route just from Rio to Buenos Aires.
