Some Canadians can now skip Service Canada and renew passports online

Canadians renewing passports issued within the last 15 years can apply from anywhere in Canada and track their application in real time online.

Canadians looking to renew their passport can now do it online, the federal government said on Tuesday.

At an announcement in Vancouver, Immigration Minister Lena Diab, joined along with Parliamentary Secretary to the Jobs and Families Minister Annie Koutrakis, said online passport renewal is now available to all eligible adults currently in Canada.

The announcement comes as part of the government’s broader effort to modernize passport service.

To apply, applicants will need to upload a passport photo provided by a commercial photographer, as well as any other supporting documents. The service also only applies to people who are renewing passports that were issued within the last 15 years.

“It means less time standing in line and more time planning your trip that you’re looking forward to,” Diab said.

Diab added the expanded online renewal service could make “a real difference” for Canadians in rural and remote communities, people with mobility challenges and those with busy schedules.

In-person and mail-in passport renewals will remain available.

Efforts to modernize Canada’s passport services also come as federal authorities warn Canadians about private websites that may falsely present themselves as official passport services.

The Competition Bureau announced Tuesday that two Ontario residents have been charged over allegations they operated websites called Passport Online and Passport Express that misled customers into believing they were dealing directly with the federal government or paying for expedited passport service.

The government also removed the daily cap on online passport renewal applications, as Ottawa expects Service Canada to process about 4.6 million passport applications this year. Diab said the limit had been set at 2,000 applications per day originally.

Asked if the new service would make passports more expensive, Diab said application fees have not been adjusted since 2013. She added that the government does not anticipate any increase soon.

“We really need to keep up with the cost of the government providing services to Canadians… we don’t anticipate an increase now because of the announcement,” Diab said.
