Is Where You Live Affecting Your Happiness, Success & Love Life? Astrocartography Says Yes

I heard about astrocartography back in 2018. I was consulting with an intuitive about whether I should move from LA to Boston, and she recommended I talk to an astrocartographer from Oregon with no website who only took phone calls. The situation felt questionable, but she said she was the best. I trusted her suggestion and booked a session, curious about what this thing even was and what it would say about my move.

“I trusted her suggestion and booked a session, curious about what this thing even was and what it would say about my move.”

I remember when she called on a spotty landline and told me to open a scanned map she’d sent via email. There were all these lines criss-crossing over different states and countries. Her whole process was very old school. She told me a lot of interesting things I don’t remember now, but what I do remember: my Venus, Sun, and Jupiter lines (those are good ones! and we’ll define them below) were close to LA. Her insights gave me the validation I needed to honor my intuition — and a year later, I moved.

For years I asked my woo-woo friends if they knew about astrocartography, and hardly anyone did. But in the last six months, I’ve started seeing an influx of TikToks and Instagram content breaking it down. I’m excited it’s becoming more mainstream because it’s a really fun way to understand your astrological chart — and how it could be directly affecting your life, energy, and happiness.

What is astrocartography?

Astrocartography was created in the 1970s by Jim Lewis. Your birth chart (which, if you’re an astrology newbie, is generated by inputting your birthday, time, and location into a birth chart generator) shows where all the planets were when you were born.

Astrocartography takes it a step further and overlays this chart onto a map of the world. It shows where certain planetary energies are strongest for you. It explains why you feel like yourself in some places and completely off in others. Why you’re drawn to certain cities or repelled by them. Why your life actually feels different depending on where you are.

If you’re considering moving, planning travel, or just feeling like you could be more of yourself somewhere else, astrocartography might help. But it’s such complicated subject matter that I needed to bring in a real expert to be our guiding light on the topic. I was excited to connect with Danielle Mercurio, a Spiritual Advisor and Astrocartographer from Austin, Texas, who’s been practicing for almost 10 years now to answer my questions.

“If you’re considering moving, planning travel, or just feeling like you could be more of yourself somewhere else, astrocartography might help.”

What I love about Danielle’s approach is that she looks at your life holistically — where you’re planning to travel, where you have special events, when you’re planning to move, what transits are happening in your chart right now, and how they affect the timing of everything. She connects the dots between timing, location, and what you’re actually trying to build. She even does something called Home Attunement work, which is less about packing up your life and more about understanding how to work with the energy of the space you’re already living in. And if you’re ready to dive straight into the deep end: she also has this theory that Mercury lines hold deep Akashic Records and past-life themes that are influencing what’s happening in this lifetime — wow!!

For this interview, we’re taking it back to basics. We talk about what the different planetary lines actually mean, real stories of people whose lives shifted when they moved to better locations, and how you can start understanding your own chart without having to completely uproot your life. Let’s get into it.

When people say “where you live affects your happiness,” astrocartography makes that literal. How does that work?

Danielle: There are certain ‘happiness’ aspects of your birth chart that are wired for joy, self-expression, fulfillment, beauty, and simply feeling comfortable living your day-to-day life. When astrocartography aligns those parts of your chart with your physical location, it can create a really supportive environment for who you naturally are.

“When astrocartography aligns those parts of your chart with your physical location, it can create a really supportive environment for who you naturally are.”

The planetary lines that tend to help with that are the Sun, Venus, and Jupiter lines because they bring qualities like vitality, love, beauty, abundance, expansion, and opportunity. When they align, it feels like your outer environment is truly supporting what your soul came here to experience, rather than working against it or even doing nothing for it at all (I call those ‘neutral’ spaces).

Can you walk me through what the different planetary lines are and what happens when someone lives or travels to them?

Danielle: While every line has its own benefits and challenges, here’s the simplest way I describe each one to clients.

  • SUN: Where you shine brightest and feel most vitally alive. Supports your daily rhythms, identity, routines, and energy levels. Often connected to lineage and ancestral roots. Expect greater visibility, community, and a stronger sense of self.
  • MOON: Where your emotional self exhales. These lines feel like a second home. They’re nurturing, private, and reconnect you with your deeper self. Ideal for family life, raising children, healing, or retirement.
  • MERCURY: Where your mind comes alive. Heightened curiosity, learning opportunities, and meaningful intellectual connection. Great for writing, studying, networking, or sharing ideas. Stay mindful of overstimulation or overcommitting. These places can also awaken past life memories or Akashic connections.
  • VENUS: Where love, beauty, and ease are amplified. These places support relationships, creativity, aesthetics, and pleasure. You naturally become more magnetic here. Just remember to maintain healthy boundaries and stay aware of addictive or codependent tendencies.
  • MARS: Where you feel driven and on fire. Career, ambition, and momentum are amplified. It’s an incredible place to build something meaningful, but burnout is real. Build in rest and protect your work-life balance.
  • JUPITER: Where the universe tends to say yes. Expansion, abundance, joy, and opportunity live here. Wonderful for taking risks, exploring your purpose, and widening your perspective. Just watch for overindulgence or believing you’re invincible.
  • SATURN: Where your highest potential is tested and revealed. These places ask you to grow up, commit, and build something lasting. Old patterns and family karma often surface here. While Saturn can feel heavy, it also creates some of the deepest transformation and long-term success.
  • URANUS: The line of change, innovation, and the nervous system. This is where you reinvent yourself, or where life reinvents you. It often accompanies major turning points like a divorce, layoff, career pivot, or empty nest. Uranus teaches you to move with change instead of resisting it.
  • NEPTUNE: Dreamy, restorative, and deeply spiritual. These places invite you to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and experience life with more imagination and compassion. Mentors and teachers often appear here. Stay grounded, though. Neptune can blur the line between intuition and illusion.
  • PLUTO: Where transformation lives. Pluto asks you to let go of an old version of yourself so something new can emerge. These places often bring profound endings and beginnings. They can feel intense, but they also hold incredible personal power when you’re willing to move through the process.
  • CHIRON: The wounded healer. These places invite you to work with childhood wounds, past life themes, and deep healing. They can awaken your gifts as a teacher or healer and often inspire a stronger connection with the land itself.
  • NORTH NODE: The direction your soul is growing toward. Spending time near your North Node line can bring a stronger sense of purpose, introduce people and opportunities that support your path, and illuminate the patterns that are ready to be released as you step into your next chapter.

Living in a place is going to naturally create more long-term implementation of the planetary lines, and you’re going to see it bend and twist and unfold and integrate over time. Whereas if you’re just visiting, you’ll get snapshots or brief bursts of sensation that imply the planet is working with you. It’s also important to notice how your body responds. It may even feel like you literally shape shifted!

“Living in a place is going to naturally create more long-term implementation of the planetary lines.”

A lot of times, I like to go visit certain areas to fill myself up with the energy and then bring it back home with me. A cosmic souvenir if you will!

Have you seen people’s lives actually change when they moved to a better location for their chart?

Danielle: Absolutely! I’ve seen it repeatedly with clients. What’s interesting is that the same planetary line can feel completely different depending on the season of life you’re in and what you’re being asked to grow through.

“The same planetary line can feel completely different depending on the season of life you’re in and what you’re being asked to grow through.”

I recently worked with a client who was struggling to get her entrepreneurial/interior design business off the ground and coincidentally, was open to moving. We decided to have her relocate to her Mars line. Within a couple of months of being there, everything started gaining momentum. She began meeting ideal clients, receiving strong referrals, and before long she was booked out for the rest of the year.

Another client moved to her Uranus line after going through a divorce. She was ready for a fresh start/new city and wanted to be somewhere that felt more aligned with who she was becoming. For her, that was Miami. Being in an environment that supported change helped her heal her relationship with her body. She felt freer, more confident, and more like herself than she had in years.

I also recently worked with a client who had been struggling to start a family. Shortly after moving to her Moon line with her partner, she became pregnant.

Astrocartography doesn’t work in isolation — life is a combination of timing, personal choice, and circumstance. But I do think where we are physically located can either support what we’re trying to cultivate or create more friction than necessary. That’s the pattern I’ve seen consistently in doing this work.

How can someone look up their own chart and start to understand what energies are active where they live right now?

Danielle: You’ll need your birth date, exact time, and location. Then head to one of two free resources: Astro.com or Astro-Seek. On Astro.com, create a free account, enter your birth details, then navigate to Free Horoscopes and select AstroClick Travel — your map will appear instantly. On Astro-Seek, go to Astro Tools and select Astrocartography, follow the prompts, and your map will be generated.

Birth time accuracy matters — even a few minutes can shift your lines, so do your best to get the exact time from your birth certificate or a parent who remembers. If your birth time is unknown, use 12:00 PM, which is the universal default used in astrology.

“If your birth time is unknown, use 12:00 PM, which is the universal default used in astrology.”

When you first open your map, it can feel like you’re staring into the cosmos itself — a swirl of lines, colors, and symbols everywhere. I recommend just taking it in and noticing first before you know what it means — what stands out? Each element is a conversation between you and the Earth, and reading it is about learning how to listen.

Then begin by noticing the lines that run near where you live. Each line carries planetary energy wherever it goes, influencing areas within roughly 125 to 250 miles on either side. If a line runs close to your city, that planet’s themes are active in your daily life. And if you’re in an empty space with no lines nearby, that’s what I call neutral territory — you absorb more from your environment and community rather than a concentrated planetary pull. Once you understand the basic themes of each planet, you can begin connecting the dots between the places you’ve lived, the places you’re drawn to, and how different environments seem to bring out different parts of you. You’ll start to see there is activity on places you always had a little ping about too!

Beyond moving, what about traveling, meeting people from those places, or decorating your home with those energies?

Danielle: One of the biggest misconceptions about astrocartography is that you have to pack up your life and move across the world to experience it. I don’t believe that.

“One of the biggest misconceptions about astrocartography is that you have to pack up your life and move across the world to experience it.”

I think we’re in relationship with place all the time, and there are countless ways to strengthen that relationship without ever changing your address. Jim Lewis introduced the idea of remote activation, which is the practice of connecting with a place through its people, culture, art, music, food, or traditions when you can’t physically be there. I’ve had clients make vision boards and bring places into their meditations as a way to connect deeper. I did this myself when I felt the call to travel to my Sun Zenith in Portugal. Within days of tapping in, I got a call from a friend hosting a retreat in the Algarve needing a co-host because someone had to back out.

Your physical home is the environment your energetic system returns to every single day. It’s where your body decides whether it can exhale, create, connect, rest, dream, or stay on alert. My work in Astrocartography eventually led me to start working with the energy of the spaces people live in. Someone can bring in colors, materials, artwork, landscapes, or natural elements that remind you of a place on your map that feels aligned. Other times it’s taking the qualities of the planet you’re living on and bridging into the home. Like soft muted tones on the Moon line, warm sunset vibes on the Sun line, or grand sweeping ceilings, artwork, and windows on the Jupiter.

“Someone can bring in colors, materials, artwork, landscapes, or natural elements that remind you of a place on your map that feels aligned.”

It also shows us how Astrocartography is a way of becoming more intentional about our relationship with the Earth, with our homes, with others based on their maps, and with ourselves. Sometimes the next chapter begins by moving, and sometimes it begins by changing the space you’re already living in based on the celestial connection it holds.

Final thoughts

Looking back, that random call with the astrocartographer from Oregon wasn’t just confirming what I already felt — it was giving me permission to trust my gut.

“Your environment affects you. If you don’t feel good somewhere, it’s probably a sign it’s not for you.”

Astrocartography, at its core, is just validating what you probably already know: Your environment affects you. If you don’t feel good somewhere, it’s probably a sign it’s not for you.

Whether you’re ready to pack up and relocate, travel to activate certain lines, or simply rearrange your home to align with the planetary energies already around you, there’s always a way to work with this.

So pull your chart and see which lines and energies are around you! And if you want deeper guidance, you can book a 1:1 session with Danielle here!
