Seattle Food Festival Shooting: What to Know

A shooting at a food festival in Seattle on Sunday killed three people and wounded four others, the authorities said.

The police were searching for one suspect and had another in custody, Assistant Chief Tyrone Davis said at a news conference late that night.

Here’s what to know.

Fire crews began responding to reports of a shooting at around 6 p.m. local time at the Seattle Center, a park area near the city’s downtown that is home to the Space Needle. A food festival, Bite of Seattle, was being hosted in the area at the time.

The police believe two people started shooting at each other during the festival. The event, which ran from Friday to Sunday and has been held since 1982, hosted more than 300 food and merchandise vendors.

Three people were killed in the shooting, including two who died at the scene.

Fire crews treated five patients whose injuries ranged from minor to serious. Four people with gunshot wounds were taken to Harborview Medical Center, including a 2-year-old boy who was in stable condition, the police said. The other victims were 23 to 56 years old.

Three of the patients were in satisfactory condition, a spokeswoman for Harborview Medical Center said Sunday, while one adult female patient was in surgery and in critical condition.

The police said late Sunday that the patient in critical condition had died of her injuries.

One person was in custody and the police were searching for a second person in connection with the shooting. The authorities did not name the person in custody or specify their age, but they said the suspect was a “young person.”

The police did not discuss potential motives, but they said they had not ruled out the possibility of more suspects. There was no active threat to the community, they said.

It was unclear whether any of the victims were related to the suspects.
