I spent weeks sleeping on Tencel lyocell and eucalyptus bedsheets to find the softest, most durable, and affordable options. These are my favorites.

I’ve been on a journey towards better sheets for a long time. In my 20s, when I didn’t know any better, I just got the cheapest poly blend on the market. (Not a coincidence: My acne was bad, and my hair was really brittle!) In my 30s, I upgraded to organic cotton, and the stiffness and structure have worked really well in Boston’s cooler climate, where I live. But the hot summers — and increasing popularity of more sustainable, cooling fabrics like Tencel and eucalyptus — got me interested in something lightweight. 

Now, I’m happy to say that I’m a convert. Silky soft and gentle against the skin, Tencel and eucalyptus are naturally breathable and moisture-wicking, keeping me cool and comfortable throughout the night. It’s easy on sensitive skin like mine, durable enough to withstand frequent washes, and feels indulgently smooth every time I slip under the covers. I assumed the soft airiness of the material would mean a lesser quality or that I would be freezing at night, but neither is true. These sheets are luscious and cloudlike without feeling like I’m losing all my heat.

What is the difference between Tencel & bamboo bedding?

To understand the difference between Tencel and bamboo, we must first understand the difference between lyocell and viscose. Both are made from cellulose from bamboo or wood pulp, but their names vary by how the cellulose is processed. Tencel, a brand name for wood-based lyocell trademarked by Austrian company Lenzing, is made from cellulose from wood pulp that’s harvested from responsibly managed forests. The Tencel brand offers certifications on traceability, ethical production, quality, and more, including OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and FSC certifications. There are also non-branded tree-based lyocell producers, as well.

Bamboo fabric, on the other hand, comes from bamboo plants but is not sustainable unless made with lyocell or closed-loop responsible viscose processes. Mechanically processed bamboo is more natural and eco-friendly, while chemically processed “bamboo viscose” can involve harsher chemicals. In addition to mechanically processed bamboo, bamboo lyocell is also a more eco-friendly choice as it’s made in a closed-loop system that does not employ harsh chemicals. Similar to the Tencel brand, CleanBamboo is a brand name for bamboo-based lyocell.

Bamboo fabrics are equally drapey and smooth as Tencel (arguably smoother!). Both fabrics are gentle on the skin and sustainable, but Tencel is often preferred for its softness and luxury, while bamboo is known for its breathability and durability. Why choose Eucalyptus for bedding?

Eucalyptus is the most common tree used to make Tencel; there’s also non-Tencel “eucalyptus fabric” that denotes generic sheets made from the tree. It’s easy to understand why it’s become a favorite in our sleep spaces, and even as a clothing option. There’s something undeniably indulgent about slipping into sheets made from eucalyptus fibers — their silky, smooth texture feels cool and gentle against our skin, helping us literally sink into rest. 

Unlike traditional cotton, eucalyptus is naturally breathable and moisture-wicking to stay comfortable through warm nights or restless sleep without feeling clammy or overheated. Beyond the immediate comfort, there’s a deeper satisfaction in knowing that eucalyptus comes from fast-growing, sustainably harvested trees, processed in ways that conserve water and minimize chemical use. So choosing eucalyptus bedding isn’t just about softness — it’s about aligning daily rituals with a quieter, more thoughtful approach to living.

What are the relevant certifications for Tencel, eucalyptus, & bamboo sheets? 

Because companies use so many different weights, blends, and methodologies, it’s important to pay attention to their claims. Certification helps make sure that brands are verifying their sustainability and manufacturing methods — so you can trust how you spend your money. These are the major certifications, and sometimes brands will have several at once or even ones you might not have seen before.

Our criteria & methodology:

I’m sleeping in a queen-size bed with my husband (on my glorious Avocado firm mattress, in case you’re wondering). Our bedroom is half underground, which makes it cooler than the upper level of our condo, but it can still get very hot in the summer months. In the past, Mike and I have had very different temperature profiles, but now that I’m in the throes of perimenopause, we both run hot. I’m not getting midnight hot flashes yet, but I do often wake up feeling warm and sweaty. We’re both active sleepers, too, so these soft, silky sheets were terrific for ease of movement. 

I tested the products for a solid two weeks, making sure to wash each set at least once on a “normal” warm cycle in our washing machine. (Brands often recommend shaking out bedding between washing and drying and removing it immediately after drying to prevent wrinkles, but I just washed them in the same way I wash all my sheets.) The weather varied in Boston, but we had some truly sweltering days in the testing period. Honestly, that was perfect. As a relative newbie to Tencel and eucalyptus sheets, I saw a noticeable difference in breathability and comfort at night. I don’t keep track of my sleep score, but I can say anecdotally that I felt less clammy and uncomfortable during the testing period, with some brands far outperforming my cotton sheets in comfort and temperature regulation.

Katherine’s Review: I got the beautiful fog color: A soft yellow-beige that worked beautifully against the grays and blues of my bedroom. It’s exceptionally well-made, with a very deep fitted sheet and long flat sheet (which is great for two sleepers who tend to hog the blankets!). Even though it was a light color, it wasn’t transparent or cheap-looking. This ties with Quince for softness and hand feel, and it had fewer wrinkles than others on this list. The soft, delicate fabric felt like sleeping in silk — the experience was that luxurious! This one’s the option that really convinced me that Tencel is better for summer.

Katherine’s Review: I’m actually already familiar with Quince’s cotton sheets; I love their quality and durability for the price. I opted for their Ocean color, which was rich and luscious (and not cheap-looking, which can be a problem with brighter sheets). This one was probably the softest of all the options, and the sheet slipped off when I tried to lay it against my hand. That also made it a touch more wrinkly; this doesn’t bother me, as they disappeared once we slept on them. The fitted sheet fit precisely over our mattress without any give, so I may not wash it on the super-hot “deep clean” cycle anytime soon. All in all, this was slightly less cool and slightly more slippery than Sijo, but both are must-have additions to my linen closet — especially since this one is the most reasonably priced on the list.

Katherine’s Review: I got the sage green color, which was actually darker and a little more gray-toned than I expected. The look was soft, shiny, and totally luxe: It made the bed (and by extension the whole bedroom) look extremely rich. There weren’t as many wrinkles out of the dryer, and it smoothed out even more as we slept on them. The fitted sheet fit well on top of the mattress; reviewers note that different colors have different strengths of elasticity, and mine had a gentle tension that didn’t budge overnight. I haven’t had the sheets long enough to see whether the color will fade, as the brand notes and some reviewers report, but that doesn’t bother me — considering the color is already pretty dark! It’s an investment (and the priciest option on this list), but a worthy one in my opinion.

It’s a worthwhile investment, in other words. 

Katherine’s Review: I’m already a fan of Cozy Earth’s cotton sheets and soft towels, so I was excited to add another option to my closet. One small detail that I always appreciate: The fitted sheet had a “side” label so I would know which way to orient it when making my bed (such a time-saver!). The sheet was also extremely deep and easy to put on my mattress — another win, in my book. The walnut sheet set was a darker color than I expected, given the photos, but it was a pretty mid-brown hue that looked great on my bed. The sheets were light and, as a result, wrinkled up when I washed them. But they smoothed out as we slept; the soft, supple feel was incredible. The pillowcases were probably my favorite: Just soft enough for movement, not so soft that my head felt like it was slipping.

Katherine’s Review: It took a little longer for these sheets to arrive, but once they did, they were an absolute favorite. PlushBeds compares its sheets to silk, and they absolutely live up to that description. I got the light blue, and it was a luscious color — slightly lighter and even more luxe-looking than depicted on the site. The fitted sheet has deep pockets and an elastic band around the bottom, which meant it hugged my mattress like a glove. The top sheet is generous, too, which is ideal for two athletic sleepers. Once the sheets were on, they were the perfect balance between soft and cooling; they had a nice weight, too, neither too heavy nor too light. This is on the higher end, price-wise, but if you want your sheets to feel better for longer, this is a great pick.

Katherine’s Review: I was totally unfamiliar with Nest before I started this test, but it probably impressed me the most. This beautiful slate sheet set actually looks more like navy, which goes beautifully with my duvet and weighted blanket. The fitted sheet is shallow and tight, which isn’t bad so long as I wash it carefully (reviewers note that on some beds, the fitted sheet rides up, so if you have a larger mattress, bear that in mind). The wrinkles disappear quickly, and the fabric is thick and deeply soft. This was probably the closest to my cotton sheets in terms of weight, but with a softer and more luscious feel.

Katherine’s Review: I have never tried a linen sheet before, much less a linen-tencel blend, so I was a tiny bit skeptical. But this was softer and more cooling than I expected! I got a pretty bone-colored set, beautifully matte in contrast to the other sets. The texture is rougher because of the linen, but it’s not at all uncomfortable. The fabric wrinkles, but not as much as some of the others. It’s a heavier weight, and opaque despite the light color, but the fabric feels light and airy against the skin. The side envelope pillowcase (where the slit is in the middle instead of at the end) was nice for keeping the pillow securely inside; now I wish all my pillowcases were designed like that.

Katherine’s Review: I really wanted the dew green colorway, but they were sold out when I ordered. Instead, I got their classic bestseller, soft beige, which was soft and lovely. It was semi-transparent, which isn’t too much of an issue for me except to note that the material felt thinner than some of the other sets. The fabric also wrinkles easily post-wash, although it does smooth out with use. The fitted sheet fits and holds well because of corner straps — a nice touch that made it unique. And it still felt cooling, if not quite as much as others higher on this list, and works as an effective budget option.

Katherine’s Review: Only the white sheet set was in stock in queen size, but it was still exciting to try this lightweight option. The fitted sheet is deep enough and has a “top or bottom” label on it, which I love. It was harder to put the fitted sheet on after washing it, so be advised if you wash your sheets in hot water, as I do. The flat sheet was gloriously long and wide — a must for us when we’re looking for new sheets. The whole set was mostly transparent and slippery, which wasn’t a bad sensation! And there were wrinkles post-wash, but they didn’t last. All in all, I think this one’s another budget-friendly option.
